CTY students apply to Johns Hopkins

Does Johns Hopkins University give admission preference to CTY students?

I don't know, but JHU certainly sends lots of letters to CTY alums urging them to apply!

I think this may only be in some special circumstance, marite. Both my sons are long-time CTY attenders/alums, and I am a JHU alum myself, and neither of them ever received anything from JHU encouraging them to apply.

Hmmm. I thought the CTY mailing list was a useful marketing tool. Or maybe it's new. CTY thinks S is still in high school, so we've been getting several mailings from JHU over the past few months.

marite, that might be a SET thing... we don't get mail from any of the colleges (fortunately, the kids checked "do not send mail" or smth similar on all the PSAT and SAT forms). But S3 (who should also be in 12th grade now) also received yet another letter from JHU couple of days ago (and I'm getting all the emails... sigh...). S3 had never been to CTY, he actually didn't even participate in the talent search, but he's a member of SET.

As for the original question, I don't know... but it's certainly a possibility.

Yes, I thought it might be SET-specific also.

To the original poster: why not post this question on the Johns Hopkins board? A student who works in the admissions office posts there regularly and may be able to give you an answer to this question.

You're right, it might be SET-specific. S checked do not send mail on the PSAT and SAT forms, but he got some mail anyway.

I think it's a CTY thing. My son took the SAT in 7th and 8th grade, but didn't attend any programs, and is now getting letters encouraging him to apply. They have the wrong year of graduation listed (as '07 not '08) but also have the designation "CTY" on the letter and some forms.

Well, at least we know it's an inconsistent thing, LOL! :)

My son, a sophomore and CTY goer just got his first mailing from JHU admissions yesterday. The BRC was clearly coded "CTY" and son is not in SET. Mootmom, I'm wondering if it has to do with where you attend CTY --- didn't both of your sons mostly go to west coast CTY locations?

By the way, slightly off topic, but does anyone have a child who attended the Johns Hopkins summer program for H.S. students? (Not CTY, the college level summer program). Son is already mourning that this year will be his last at CTY and he's been talking with CTy friends about them all going to JHU summer program next year.

Yes, both my sons went to west coast CTY locations except for one year when younger S spent both sessions at Washington College in Chestertown, MD. Ah well, whatever: S#1 is happily ensconced in his college already, and S#2 is unlikely to have the grades or temperament to qualify for JHU anyway.

There are a couple students on the JHU board here that attended the HS summer program there, poke around a little and you'll figure out which ones and could PM them for their experiences.

Inconsistent? That's a grand understatement. My S2 was SET, attended 1 CTY class, won a free summer JHU class from the talent search, was 1 of 5 perfect SAT scorers in March in Maryland and I work here in a building less than 100 yards from the admissions office, AND

he has never gotten one piece of mail from JHU. Go figure :D

Wyogal, LOL! You should tell the admissions office to improve its mailing practices!

I went to CTY for four years and took Investigations in Engineering at JHU and got college credit from JHU's Whitey School of Engineering

after I went, the next school year I got an JHU Student ID card, access to their libraries, JHU alumni mail

haha, it's great... not sure if it could get me into JHU easier, but I feel proud flashing my card saying I'm a student at JHU hehe
