Other than the obvious difference in location and coverage, are there any main differences between the two?
Especially in program content, quality of student sources, and cost?
Does Duke TIP have something similar to SET at CTY?

I din’t think Duke has a tipity top group like SET. I called once and they’ll accept Previous SAT scores so your child doesn’t have to take the test again. When I checked TIP top scores were slightly higher than CTY highest group scores. CTY doesn’t have specialized SET level courses. Davidson does however. So if your child has very high scores look at Davidson. The location kept my kiddo from attending. Wish they had online courses not affiliated with their high school. Would be great.
I can speak to our experience with Duke TIP. For the younger members in the CRISIS program I was not particularly impressed with the quality of the staff, nor the organization of the program. Both of our children participated at 2 different sites, over 2 different years. For older TIP members, the summer institutes are supposed to be wonderful, engaging and well staffed. Our kids chose not participate in those programs, but I know plenty of others who did and had fabulous experiences. Another program to consider is the Vanderbilt Programs for Talented Youth (like TIP and CTY, it is a test-in program for “gifted” students). Our family loved the programs for the younger as well as the high school age kids. Extremely well run, and in my opinion, the staff has been top notch (teaching, administrative, and residential). The dorms / facilities are excellent, and our children truly enjoyed their immersive experience.
Tough thing is, your gifted children have to fit into the specific gifted program. There is a wide range within these groups. The worst thing is for the kid to be bored or have it be too difficult. I have found that calling these places and asking lots of questions helps. Also tell them your kids scores. They might have suggestions. They can also often suggest a course you hadn’t thought of before.
Thank you and these are all great insights. Pls keep them coming.
I would suggest, when you recommend alternative institutions and programs, it is best to give the name and a web link, so we all could take a look.
Not a single bad thing to say about the many CTY programs dos have been involved with over the years (well… I wish do they cost less over the years). Not sure about the other two programs, except that they also have good reputations. My guess is that you cannot go wrong with any of them? Best of luck.
@Heading2HS Thanks for the tip re: a link. I am new to CC and not entirely certain what is allowed to be posted. Here is the link to the Vanderbilt PTY. https://pty.vanderbilt.edu
