Cty?

Have any of you done CTY's summer or online programs or know anyone who has? I'm looking for some feedback on whether or not to apply. Stories? Reviews?

I went to the summer program (now labeled “Intensive Studies”) in 2008 and 2009, both in Los Angeles. I took Crafting the Essay (now “Creative Nonfiction”) and Fast-Paced High School Chemistry, respectively.

If:

a) you can afford it
b) you are interested in learning things and don’t really have a specific focus that could be better served by another program (for example, math people usually go to something like AwesomeMath, Ross, or Mathcamp)
c) you like the idea of living with a roommate and being in a ~10-person group that you get to know pretty well in 3 weeks

Then it wouldn’t hurt to apply. I fit the above conditions, and CTY was a good experience for me, though doing math stuff would have been better in hindsight. You’ll most likely meet a bunch of great and interesting people, a good chunk of which will spend many hours a day with you in classes taught by competent and often engaging teachers.

(Protip: try to do something you’re actually interested in. Chemistry wasn’t really my thing, and though it was still pretty fun, I feel like I would have been better served by taking a math course like Mathematical Logic or Probability and Game Theory.)

I’m currently taking the CTYOnline Linear Algebra course. It’s going pretty well; I apparently have a 96 average in the class, though I’ve only really seen my test scores. For this class and Multivariable Calculus, you read the book, do some problems, send your solutions, and get feedback. Repeat until you finish the unit and take the test. Move on to the next unit. You can always ask for help from the instructor, but I didn’t really need to. The format is different for the Algebra/Geometry/Trig/AP Calc classes, though.

I took EPGY in elementary school (accelerated math) and absolutely loved it. I don’t know where the courses max out, but I don’t think they’re viable for high schoolers.

I took a Essay Writing class at Stanford quite a few years back, and it was pretty good. I thought it was worth the cost (it was rather expensive) and I learned a good bit.
I think you should go ahead and take a class you don’t think you’re super involved in - it helps to branch out your horizons and learn things you wouldn’t normally study. That being said, hopefully it’s something you’ll enjoy.

Yes I am posting at 2 am please dont judge

It is 5:13 am here. I need to sleep :|
