CU Boulder

If a student applies to the engineering school at CU Boulder, what are the possible (acceptance) outcomes? I know they have the pre-Engineering program option if they are not accepted outright. But are they considered for the Exploratory Track if they don’t get into pre-engineering either? If so, how difficult is it for them to IUT into engineering?

Thanks!

I was just accepted into the Program in exploratory studies. I did not get into engineering or even pre engineering. I have a 1360 sat and 3.7 unweighted and 4.0 weighted just to give you a baseline for comparison. From the program in exploratory studies, you have to do an IUT into engineering after your freshman year at the earliest (2 semesters). After that first year, you have to have a cumulative, overall gpa of 3.0 or higher and a cumulative technical gpa of 2.7 or higher (technical gpa consists of your math, physics, and chem classes). There are also some required classes you have to take such as some math and science and you cant exceed 60 attempted credit hours, but other than that, those are the only requirements. The IUT process is not competitive so as long as you meet those requirements, you are guaranteed admission into the college of engineering starting your sophomore year. As for how difficult it is to achieve those gpa’s, I have no idea, I’ve been trying to find answers to that as well to figure out if I should go there and attempt the IUT. I spoke with the academic adviser for the Aerospace department and he said that every semester, the college of engineering gets a decent amount of students to successfully IUT into engineering, so its not a rarity. Hope this helps!

Congratulations! That is so helpful! It definitely sounds like the Exploratory Studies sounds like a pretty cool option. Thank you so much. Best of luck!

Just wondering…If you are able enter the engineering program after Freshman year vis IUT, does that mean you can still graduate in 4 years? Do those required courses that first year count towards your major or have you lost time?

Following up to your post from last March, did you attend CU and can you share more on the exploratory studies program? My son just accepted into exploratory studies and trying to decide the right path. Thx.

Hey there, yes I did end up attending CU and am starting my second semester there now. I actually lucked out for this, but maybe a month or so after I was accepted into ES, they emailed me and said room opened up in engineering and gave me a spot. I don’t know whether they short change themselves on how many they let into engineering at first and then fill it later, but that is what happened to me. I accepted an offer to Syracuse originally and was not going to participate in the ES program but then they opened spots and I switched back to CU. The choice is yours whether you want to try ES program or go somewhere else, but I wouldn’t give up on being let into engineering just yet. This switch happened to a lot of kids so there’s a chance it will happen with you. Sorry I couldn’t give more insight into the ES program, but good luck!

Thank you for sharing. Are you pleased with the program? How tough are the freshman courses? My experience, which is dated, is that freshman physics and calc are extremely tough.

Yes im very pleased with it so far, the professors and TAs are all great and have lots of office hours and extra help options. As for the classes, it depends on your background. I took calc and physics senior year in high school and then re-took them first semester so it wasnt too bad. I would recommend at least having exposure to it.

Great to hear. Thanks for sharing.
