CU honors program- worth it?

Just got into the honors program here..I saw what it said online about it, however, does anyone know if its really worth it?, will it really do anything for you?, any perks come with it??..thx

I am a CU parent with a freshman who is in the honors program, so I can tell you what I know from her and from orientation. (But check further – I could be mistaken!)

The honors program is just a matter of having high enough grades/test scores when you are first accepted and then maintaining a certain average (3.0 I think, but may be slightly higher). All that really means is that you have the opportunity to take honors courses. These are generally smaller, seminar style classes. My daughter took one last semester (a lit class) and it was fine, but she didn’t really think the prof was that great or the class. I’m sure there are really excellent classes, but she actually the prefers the advanced writing foundations class (not honors) that she’s taking this semester.

The main perk that comes with the program is the option to live in the honors dorm, Arnett. My daughter chose Baker instead and is happy with that, as she gets to take her general chemistry classes in the RAP instead of a giant lecture. The honors dorm has RAP classes, but she didn’t find them as appealing. Now that she’s been living on campus, she has mentioned hearing that Arnett is the least “party atmosphere” dorm and is relatively quiet. This could be a pro or a con depending on what you’re looking for! Location-wise it’s kind of in between – closer to main campus stuff than Will Vill, but further than the dorms around Farrand field.

Another thing to keep in mind is that depending on your major, there may be an option for departmental honors as well. I think these are the honors programs that you allow you to graduate with honors. You’ll want to check with your major department on this.

So, for your questions – Is it worth it? Well, there’s no cost or anything and being in honors just gives you some more class options. It’s up to you to decide if a particular honors class is worth taking over a regular class.

As for the honors dorm, I think there is an extra cost, but I can’t remember anymore if it’s more than a regular RAP. It’s probably not that different, so my advice would be to look at the differences between Arnett and the other dorm choices and decide which you would prefer.

Good luck and congratulations!
