Hi guys, so I live in Colorado and really want to go out of state for college. I applied to several ivies, all of which I have been rejected from and then Hampshire is the last of 7 colleges that I got into besides Boulder. Which would you guys recommend? Not sure which to choose. I really want a change of scene, but I only applied to Hampshire because it had the open curriculum like brown (my dream school from which i was rejected). Any input would be great! Thank you!

My daughter, now a CU freshman was facing a similar problem last year. Though in her case, Hampshire was her number one pick and the decision was financial. It came down to CU with no debt or Hampshire with significant debt (and she would be responsible for half the debt). Are finances an issue for you?

It’s hard to make a suggestion without knowing more about your situation, but it sounds like the reason for choosing Hampshire may not be too solid. I think my daughter would have done well there, but again, it was her number one choice after visiting and a lot of research. I don’t really know anything about how similar Hampshire is to Brown.

If money is part of your equation, I’d encourage you to try CU. My daughter has had her ups and downs and is still considering a transfer to Hampshire, but she’s also found that CU has some benefits. Even if you live in Boulder, it is still a bit of a “change of scene.” My daughter viewed CU (very negatively) as “high school plus” because it is the top choice for all the local schools and she and her friends hung out on campus a lot in high school. But living in the dorms and being on your own is still a very new experience.

Good luck with your decision!
