I thought Segundo was the golden boy of housing areas in Davis... best DC, good location, social...

Anyway, people call Cuarto anti-social. In Daviswiki: "It has been noted by many (including UC Davis Tour Guides) that the Cuarto area is somewhat "anti-social" due to its layout and room styles. Many of those who chose to remain residents would dispute this claim. Some of the Cuarto suites are very much active and home to many typical freshmen activities."

There's a few problem i personally have with cuarto (this is personal preference):

1) They're located off campus (the furthest ones are about a 7-10 minute bike ride to campus. This can be pretty crappy when you have only an hour between classes.
2) The layout (suite-style) really leads to anti-socialism on the floors. This is not to say you won't make friends, but chances are you'll make more friends at parties and stuff than in the dorms. So if you're not a partier, this may work against you in terms of meeting new people.
3) They're DC's suck in comparison to segundo and tercero. in fact, a lot of kids from cuarto flood the segundo dc during meal times.
4) There is the relatively small chance that one of your suitemates will be your RA. This may or may not be cool depending on what your RA is like...

There are pluses though. You'll have a larger room with a common area, and it is easier to be louder at night in cuarto rooms just because of the design of the buildings, etc.

I personally chose to live in segundo and i would recommend it. I think most people at Davis would agree that it's got the best location, and overall the most sociable dorms just because of the way they are laid out.

My d listened to all the hype about the Segundo DC and never ate in hers the whole first half of the year. The second half she tried it out. Mind you there are two DC's for Cuarto and hers was the smallest one. She found that they got many special treats (like strawberries and a great salad bar) NOT available in the other DC's and the manager really listened to what they wanted.

Segundo is the best DC on earth. You WILL gain weight there, I am so serious. Tercero has a smaller newer DC. I remember hearing that Cuarto DC sucks. All the dorms are good, Cuarto has a pool. I lived in Segundo (in one of the old Regan dorms) and I still had a great time. Dunno about Tercero.

So the major turn off for people seems to be its anti-social nature. Thx, I'll take that into consideration.

Is there anything else? How bad is the distance?

And how often, if ever, do you (in a regular dorm) wish you had a Cuarto-ish living arrangement? Or has it been a no regrets kinda thing in choosing Segundo etc over Cuarto?

The only advantage Cuarto has compared to Segundo/Tercero is that your bathrooms are private; meaning only you and your suitemate will use the toilet and shower. Compared to the communal showers and bathrooms in Segundo/Tercero, it's SO awesome. That's the only thing I'm really jealous about.

Nothing else too bad about Cuarto, except they use real keys instead of your ID to enter their rooms.. which is really more of an opinionated con. Some people enjoy having a key, while others like using their ID.

Segundo DC is by far the best. Even my Tercero friends wind up going to Segundo because the food there tastes better.

I am currently living in Segundo in one of the high rise buildings, and I must say these buildings are probably the best place to live. They have a kitchen and laundry room on EACH floor (Segundo North/Tercero South only have one kitchen and laundry room on the first floor), we have a stand-up piano and flat screen HDTV in the lounge. I was bummed that I didn't get the new buildings, but since I lived in them for a month before school started, I figured I already had my share ..and I wound up liking the older buildings much more anyways! =P

I didn't live in cuarto but I have many friends who did. One advantage to the Cuarto dorms is that if you do not like one of your roomates/ suitemates, you have three more.

Its really not that far from campus. Its about a block from the Segundo dorms and if you are really lazy you can take the bus.

Tercero is basically like segundo...except that its far from the edge of campus (it's a bit of a walk or bike ride to get off campus) and it smells like cow dung since they keep the cows literally RIGHT across the street.

cuarto has its own bathrooms? i thought a few buildings in tercero had their own bathrooms too..and i was thinking tercero had the best set up..but if cuarto has its own bathrooms, that could be a major major plus..anything else?
