Pomona
Brown
Wesleyan
Harvard (legacy)
Vassar
Macalester
Yale
Swarthmore
Grinnell
Bowdoin
Reed
Amherst

Am I a competitive applicant? Am I crazy to even consider Ivy League or other extremely competitive schools like Amherst/Pomona/Swarthmore? I feel like I have no hook. From what I have, does anyone think I should work in a particular area to try to make it a hook?

Please give me a list like - <xyz college="">: accept/waitlist/reject</xyz>

I understand it's difficult to make decisions like that without seeing essays and letters of recommendation, but I'd like some honest and specific opinions.

Thanks!

You have a great chance at all thoose schools, well as good as anyone can have at harvardand yale anyways. Not many males get an 800 in reading, and doing so makes you very appealing to colleges so Ive heard. you have a decent shot at yale, hvard, amherst, and swarthmore, and you should be in everywhere else

wait, are you or are you not a legacy at harvard? because you're other thread didn't indicate whether or not you had legacy....

anyway, i'd say you have good chances at the ivies if your school is as good as you say.

I am a legacy at Harvard. I chose not to mention it the other thread.

Other advice/chances?

Um...

Legacy + 2300 = Acceptance.

'nuff said.

^^ Even if my father only gives around $100 a year? O.o

More chances?

Also, something on my mind.. Does a slight "downward trend" hurt from freshmen year on? I went from all A's some A+'s in freshmen year to about half A's half A-'s junior year, but obviously with harder classes. What will colleges think of that?

How prestigious is your school: like how many go to Harvard a year/is your GPA on par with those that do. Seriously Harvard knows what is good at your school, so a slight downward trend shouldnt factor in as long as your grades remain good by Harvard's standards.

Well, two people are going to Harvard this year. (from a class of 90)

One is the valedictorian, one is a URM.

Everyone seems to be only chancing me for Harvard. Just because "it's Harvard" and I'm a legacy doesn't make it my first choice.

I'm just really stressed out about my chances next year knowing it will be the most difficult college admissions year that there's ever been and ever will be.

I would like opinions on my chances at some good LAC's like Pomona, Vassar, Wesleyan, Swarthmore. I'd be really happy if I went to any of those schools. Does being a boy help?

If you're looking at Macalester, while in the area (if you visit) I recommend looking at Carleton as well. Very similar in feel to Grinnell from what I hear. I have a freshman at Carleton this year and loving it. Strong in the sciences. ... Your list is terrific. My daughter (a Kentucky girl) applied to several and got in at Pomona, Macalester, and Vassar as well as Carleton. Brown didn't seem to want her. Alas.

Thanks for the compliment on the list, Hindoo. I would be happy ending up at any of the schools I posted, which I think is different from the majority of people.

I'm glad your daughter is loving Carleton! I actually have a longer list of about 18 colleges, and Carleton is on it. I didn't want to overwhelm people chancing me haha. I will be visiting it in about two months! Also visiting Grinnell, UChicago, Macalester, and Oberlin on the same trip.

My friends and I have been wondering for quite a while if whether or not this is actually true. Some people have said that 08 was the peak, others argue that 09 will be worse.

Anyone care to comment on the validity of that statement?

We'll know as far as Wesleyan is concerned once the final class is assembled. This may have been a tough year for both sexes.

I read somewhere that the high school Class of 2008 is the largest of all time, and that each class thereafter is expected to be smaller. Don't know if this is actually true. Just what I read.

this is true that class of 08 is the largest because in 1990 there was the greatest amount of births in America since 1962 and births have decreased after 1990! so that means i still have a chance yeh!!!!

and i think you can get into swarthmore and ponoma because i know many people at our school who had 2200s and tons of ap's (about 9 or 10 and self-studied one or two) and got in. the difference was that their gpa was slightly higher but not much higher than yours. be happy that you are doing so well and live life. also trying looking at harvy mudd.
