Hi, I wanted to take a 2 period cullinary arts class in senior year. I would also take many other rigorous AP classes. Would taking the class make me a bad canidate for college? I’m intrested in cooking but don’t want to go to cooking school.
Is that a two-period class? What else would you be taking?
All in all culinary arts is a great class to take senior year since you’ll use it your whole life. However you need to have 5 academic classes alongside it senior year - can you do that?
My daughter (and I) had a difficult time making this decision as well. Ultimately, she took the 2-period culinary class along with 4 APs, for her standard 6-period day. She had also front-loaded on rigorous classes in 9-11 grade. She wrote one of her essays about how much more she felt that she learned in culinary, than had she added another AP. Out of 7 applications to schools ranked mid-30s to low-100s, she has received 7 acceptances.
Obviously she is happy with how things turned out. But I hope that if her results were different, she would be able to be OK with that too. I think it’s more important to be who you are, and accept what that leads to, than to try to be who you think they want you to be. (But I also know the stress and uncertainty heading into the application season.) I wish you the best in making the choice that’s right for you.
