how diverse is michigan? i am a hispanic male from NYC, just wondering if i would be ready by the kind of people there.

Michigan is quite diverse, but obviously, not the most diverse when it comes to Hispanics. Rouhgly 5% of Michigan's undergraduate student body is Hispanic, which os pretty good. 5% of 25,000 means 1,250 hispanic students. Most elite universities have anywhere from 3% to 8% hispanic students. So Michigan's numbers are solid, but compared to 15% at Rice or UT-Austin, they are poor. Also, hispanics at most elite schools in California make up more than 10% of the total undergraduate student body.

However, there are currently 2,000 undergrads from NYC at the University, making it the largest state presentation other than Michigan. In fact, I am pretty sure that outside of the state of NY, no university in the land has more undergraduates hailing from NY.

good info. thanks.

No problem. My mother is Colombian born and raised (Lebanese origin though), so I am only too happy to help.

From my experience, UMich seems to be pretty diverse, although most of the diversity comes from Asians (South and East). There are some african americans, but I hardly see any hispanics on campus.

Why are there so many kids from New York? Don't they have like Cornell, NYU and Columbia which are closer to them then Umich?

There are currently 60,000 Michigan alums living in NYC. Many of those have raised kids who bleed maize and blue. They raise them watching football games, take them to Ann Arbor and definitely tell their kids of how great their experience at the UofM was. Furthermore, many NYers chose Michigan because they want to leave the state to experience something new and Ann Arbor is a great option. Finally, many OOS students chose Michigan because it combines the great academics present at elite private universities with the great all around college experence found at large, spirited universities.
