CUNY Baruch Honors or SUNY Binghamton?

Which one would you take if you wanted to pursue an MBA at a top 10 school? And why?

CUNY Baruch, because of its location. NYC offers so much opportunity for internships and to meet mentors in the business field. Where are you from? have you visited Binghamton?

No I haven't, but from what I hear, it's in the middle of nowhere!

I dont know how reliable this source is, but businessweekly says the starting median salary for Bing undergraduate students is $55,000 a year! Right next to NYU! On the Baruch website, they said average median salary is $44,444!

http://bwnt.businessweek.com/bschools/undergraduate/07rankings/

I live in NYC, so either way, i'd be applying for interships and jobs here. What do you guys think?

And what do you guys think about Rutgers for business?

Don't go by starting salaries. Salaries will increase greatly and will catch up as time goes on. Much will depend on your performance. Baruch has amazing connections in NYC and, at least in the past, was much cheaper. My only concern is that Baruch won't give you a true college experience since it is mainly a commuter school.

harv5859,
are you applying as an UG or grad? taxguy makes a good point regarding the college exp for a UG. Have you considered SUNY Albany?

Albany is trash don't go there. Baruch or Binghamton.

Go to Bing. Everything about it is way better than Baruch except its location. Plus Baruch is a commuter school (i think).

It's for undergrad... I already stated that.

I want to "have the college experience" BUT from what I hear, and from you guys, Baruch has great opportunities to find jobs right here in NYC! (which is what i want)

According to businessweekly, Bing isn't great on recruiting. Does anyone know about this?

According to people I know who go to Bing or have graduated from there, and from the school itself, it does lots of recruiting. However, I minaly know about the Accounting... the Big Four recruit heavily from Bing.

I honestly doubt you can go wrong either way.

I would want the college experience though and would go to Bing for that over staying in NYC. That's me though... and it's why I'm going to Bing this fall as a junior transfer.

more opinions please

Hi, I go to Binghamton but as an engineering major. Maybe I can chime in with my view.

I don't know much about CUNY Baruch, but I definitely know A LOT of companies come out to BU to recruit. Morgan Stanley, Ernest & Young, etc... You won't have a hard time, they usually come in during the fall time. The school of management here is well organized - the faculty always let you know about employers coming in and having fairs (better than the engineering school).

The SOM buildings are very nice too, professors are top notch. They really expect a lot out of you, is what I hear. I was almost an accounting major, but switched to EE.

As far as Binghamton being in the middle of nowhere, I wouldn't put it in terms of that... I mean, it might not be the best place to go to college since this is a college town. You'll still be able to go and drink, go to bars, etc... if you're into that. It's 3-4 hours away from NYC, 1 hour from Syracuse, and 5-6 hours from Buffalo. It's pretty centered in NY.

any1 else?

any more opinions would be appericiated

If you goal is the big 4 accounting firms , higher average salary, more college experience. i recommend BU.
As you know baruch is a commuting school , so you will spend about 2hours only for commuting to school if you don;t live in manhattan. I am really sick of this and it's one of the reason why i'm trying to transfer out to binghamton from baruch.
There's nothing special about being in the honors program. all you get is free
1.macbook( you have to return it if your average goes below 3.3 or sth)
2.early class registration prior to other students. thats it!

Just don't come to baruch. you'll regret it !

Shortie88, Maybe Baruch has changed in the last 30 years, but when I graduated from there, I had no shortage of big accounting firm offers. The key is to get a good GPA,which is 3.5+.

Second don't downplay the benefits of geting a free computer and early class registration. The computer saves a lot of money and having priority registration is REALLY nice. Get closed out of one or two of your top picks and you will see how much you will mist early registration

As for commuting, I came in from L.I.. I never took 2 hour to commute. It was about a 45 min train ride, if that to Manhattan and a 25 min walk from the station. You can look at a glass half full or half empty. Personally, I loved the sights and smells of Manhattan. I got to eat at different restaurants all the time and met some "hot gals" while in school. The daily walk also put me in the best shape of my life.I guess that you just have to be the right person for that type of environment.

this thread was a big help to me over 5 years later!
