(CUNY) Brooklyn or Hunter?

I am an English major and I’m transferring from CC, I am having a hard time deciding between Brooklyn College and Hunter College, I like that Hunter is the city but I really don’t like campus, I love Brooklyn’s campus.
I know Hunter has a good English program but what about Brooklyn?

**I am also looking to double major in Film, I know Brooklyn is very good for that, any opinions on Hunter’s film program?

They are both excellent schools. Pretty sure Sec of State Colin Powell went to Brooklyn College and Hunter is getting very competitive again. But I defer to @Theoden who knows much more about these schools.

Best of luck.

My son goes to Brooklyn and is majoring in Business my daughter to Hunter majoring in dance.

First of all, you can get a great education at either school and it’s what you make of it.

Brooklyn has a nicer campus, hands down, quite classic looking. It’s in Flatbush/Midwood. Their English dept is good, but as strong as Hunter’s. I don’t know about their film dept. My son spends little time on campus outside of classes.

Hunter overall, is considered a better school. My son has had some very good teachers and some “meh” teachers at Brooklyn College, my daughter, on the other hand has had mostly excellent teachers at Hunter. Since she studies dance she gets to use their amazing space for her own work. Their English department is very, very, good. Don’t know much about their film dept. It’s near Central Park on the very tony Upper East Side of Manhattan. The campus is really just buildings. Not a nice quad like Brooklyn College. To be fair, NYU feels scattered, too.

If you’re a commuter, you aren’t going to have a built in community at either school like you might at a residential college, so you’ll need to make an effort to get to know people - join clubs. Also you will need to take time to get to know your professors. Also when it comes to career advisement you need to make use of all their facilities and work hard at connecting with advisors, etc.

Administratively, Hunter and Brooklyn are super bureaucratic and impersonal. Much more so than at a community college. My son started at Kingsborough CC and found them super-helpful. However, once he got to Brooklyn, he was treated like a number. My daughter has the same experience at Hunter. You just need to be prepared and get things done early. Again I’m talking the administration, not the faculty.

Correction: Brooklyn has a nicer campus, hands down, quite classic looking. It’s in Flatbush/Midwood. Their English dept is good, but not as strong as Hunter’s. I don’t know about their film dept. My son spends little time on campus outside of classes. I think Brooklyn might be stronger in film…

How much time do you have to decide?

Perhaps make an appointment with both departments at both schools and visit. Talk to the profs. As I said, you will get a great education at either school.

It also depends on you. My son is a business major, but not super-excited about academics and not passionate about his major. He got into Baruch which is amazing for business but he wanted a less intense environment, so he chose Brooklyn. He’s just looking to get a degree and a well-paying job. My daughter is “on-fire” for dance and loves her classes, plus is really enjoying the other things she’s studying and she found her tribe. That’s more about who my children are than a statement about the school.

You’ll commute to both. You’ll need to be in clubs at both.

You are in good company if you go to either school.
