Cuny Honors @ Baruch And Nyu Stern

Hi. I attend the Bronx High School of Science and I have a Unweighted 90.7 average, 2050 SATs (770 Math 650 Reading 630 Writing with 11 Essay). I also have 800 on IIC.
How are the classes at CUNY Honors and NYU Stern? Which college has more work? Which is harder? Well, I thought I should go to CUNY because its cheap; my family isn't that rich. Any info of these two colleges will be appreciated. Thank you so much.

NYU's financial aid package is insultingly small, from what I've heard.

Cuny Honors is soooo competitive. I know so many people who got into Cornell, BU, BC, among others, and not into Cuny Honors... Getting into Stern would be incredible, but I think that the price of Baruch (or lack there of, because I think if you get into Honors it's free, plus some) is so much more worth it. It's like 35k vs. 0k...Also, if this was anything other than business I would have a different view, but it's business and especially if you're planning to stay in NYC you'll find great job opportunities coming out of Baruch.

In terms of Business education, CUNY Baruch has become a powerhouse and HIGHLY desireable.

Oh wow CUNY Honors is that competitive? Well, I do go to Bronx Science (Cuny Honors accepted about 65 from our school last year; they know us well) and I am in the city. My college mentor said I will definately get in, but I`m still praying lol. I was talking about the classes itself. Is CUNY Honors classes lot of work compared to other top tier colleges? Thanks a lot

Oddly enough in my school (which you would probably be familar w/ joekar) people got into Stern and not CUNY Honors Baruch last year...but who knows what they are looking for, because weaker candidates got in over stronger ones if we are talking strictly GPA and SAT scores.

I agree with what willact4food has to say. I go to Brooklyn Tech, btw.

i go to cuny honors at baruch..but i was waitlisted to nyu stern last year when i applied (later to find out no one was taken off the waitlist). so far, the classes aren't very difficult, (though you are required to take a minimum of 10 honors courses during your tenure)..but then again, im only a freshman so this may change. basically, the professor you have means everything so the people here constantly search for ratings.

i agree with what some others said, i know people who got into nyu stern and cornell who did not make it into cuny honors. the only reason i can think of for this is community service. the director of the honors program at baruch has told us during one of our freshman seminars 'all of you showed evidence of community service, that is why you're here.' shes a super nice lady...and shes ALL about giving back to the community (btw...you will need to perform 8 hours of community service your freshman year then 15 hours each year after that). it doesn't seem like a big thing to most colleges, but specifically for baruch i think this may be the case. because...again, i know ppl with 99 averages and 2100 SAT scores who did not make it, whereas others with lower GPAs and test scores did. i doubt it was the personal essay (which has to be on NYC) because i finished writing mine 20 minutes before the post office closed the day it was due. boy am i glad i included my jewish center volunteer experience :] however, conducted by my own amateur research, i don't know of any but myself whos scored above a 2200 on the SAT and goes to cuny honors at baruch. statistically, baruch does however have the highest SAT score range of all cunys.

Do CUNY Honors students get dorms?

Baruch supplies by far the largest number of business professionals in New York, which also means their networking is very strong.

Back in the dark ages, I went to Stuy. NYU was the safety school for folks who couldn't get into Baruch Honors. That has changed because so many more out-of-towners want to come to NYC, but consider the alternative educational uses for the money you save by NOT going to NYU. Even if you consider NYU better than Baruch Honors (I doubt it, but try the exercise), it is not better than Baruch Honors plus $100k spent on other educational opportunities.

Baruch doesn't have any dorms but that doesn't mean you can't try for student housing in other areas.

Personally, I believe that Baruch is far better than NYU. It feels like NYU will just suck up all your money to give you an education that Baruch will give for a far lower price.

Please elaborate...which other areas?

there is student housing available directly across the street from baruch, which is where most of the SVA kids stay. also, any CUNY student can dorm at the new towers built for the city college, but many other CUNY students from different colleges can choose to dorm there. because they were just completed this year, the cost is way more than what you'd be paying for tuition. and if you're in the honors college, tuition is covered either way.

if you look at the baruch website and click on students then housing they provide alternates to dorming.

to contribute more to this thread I go into NYU-Stern but rejected from CUNY Honors Baruch

what about Honors Baruch? How does that compare to other business schools (NYU, Michigan, etc)..
I know the honors Baruch students receive full scholarship, laptop, etc.... but do they also get free housing? (i.e. their apartments are paid for)? don't they also get a stipend?

youve posted this in 2 other threads..read the boards..

hey guys anyone going to the cuny honors @ baruch reception?
i'm going; so if anyone is, then we can talk about it. hahahhah. Does anyone know about any stats on cuny honors job placement. I got accepted to NYU stern and cuny honors @ baruch, but i'm a liitle bit scared about Baruch's outlook in the business world.

Any comments are welcome. thnx in advance.

a bunch of people are in the same boat as you, or were at least. many people at baruch were accepted to stern as well, but for whatever reason ($$ probably) chose not to attend. to be honest, the average starting salary for baruch graduates is actually higher than that of stern's. this was said by one of the administration (that it was somewhere around $67k), so i don't know if you can find it online, or if its even true to begin with. i basically recalled sally-blount lyon at one of the nyu stern open houses mentioning that stern's avg starting salary is around $52-54k. but i do think it has more to do with the students ability to take advantage of the opportunities offered. at baruch, there is a great career development center that provides pretty nifty resources for those who seek them.

dammit i should have applied to cuny honors @ baruch...i got into nyu tho...

my friend got accepted to princeton and not from cuny honors @ hunter.

the end
