I'm applying to cuny honors at brooklyn college next year (i'm taking a year between highschool and college) but i'm not sure i have a chance at all since i'm homeschooled.
My gpa (so far) is 92.8
My SAT scores are 590 for math, 740 for verbal and 630 for writing.

Since i am not in a regular school, i haven't been in any science clubs or anything extra...do you think i have a shot?

your right (museless)..the average was 1384 out of 1600 and 93.4 average GPA
for collegebound106..y r u taking a year of school...they won't like dat..it wont help ur chances!

Cuny schools are good if you can get into a good program like Cuny Honors or Sophie Davis or something; they are much less expensive than trying to pay for an out-of-state or ivy league school.

Suny schools are a really good deal, I go to one and the education I get in my engineering curriculum EE/CSE is really top notch compared to the other schools I have transfered from. Of course there are better schools, I go to my Cuny school for free pretty much I just need to pay for my dorm, and that will be free soon also.

I have taken classes at cuny schools and they are a joke, the education is very poor and the resources suck. Now I only took classes at Hunter and Lehman college over the summer, i didn't learn to much and the standard of education was really really low, even though i got A's in my classes i had to end up retaking them at my main university because either they taught it wrong or they never taught it/didnt go into enough detail. This really set me back and killed me. This was a major disappointment and I have determined myself to never even come close to the Cuny system again. While this was for math & engineering classes which cuny or NYC in general is not known for, I cannot speak of other disciplines. I Just recommend you stay away if you are doing any science, math or engineering.

i do have a few friends in the Cuny honors program and they pretty much use it because of the free money. They all got into Columbia and NYU, though chose Cuny Honors because of the good deal. The views are very different, some hate it and say its HS all over again and some love it and think its a great value. The majority of them feel as if they are being used and they plan to transfer to NYU or Columbia in the near future. They do in general say that there is a huge difference between honors classes and general population classes. This is really just a way for the Cuny system to say, hey look we can compete with NYU or Columbia, by buying off students.

I know I wouldn't go to a cuny for my reasons, as they don't do to well for what Im interested in, but if you are looking for something no scientific like pre-law, they look really good.

Yeah, CUNYs are mostly likely a joke. There for the kids who didnt do so well in highschool. But are there any good schools in New York? Because when I go to college.. im not sure if I would want to stay in New york but it if theres good schools that are not on Long Island that arent commuter schools, ill go.

top CUNY's would be ranked around 180'ish if US news ranked that far. they're not bad, mostly kids who werent accepted to SUNY's or decided to stay in the city go there

i somewhat agree with circuit, ive heard classes at hunter and lehman are super easy and most people don't like it at either. hunter is a bunch of nasty old buildings and lehman is a little on the ghetto side. i'm a cuny honors freshman at baruch and there are substantial differences between honors and regular classes. many who just matriculate already have prior inentions of transferring to places like columbia or other ivies (not so much to nyu considering about 90% of people who applied to stern from baruch got in as freshman).. little by little many realize its a pretty sweet deal and you basically get paid to go there. though i myself will be applying as a transfer, i know i won;t be disappointed by having to stay at baruch if rejected.

yeah premed and all that other science stuff is pretty nice at city college. the sophie davis division they have is worth checking out too (choose either a 5-year or 7-year premed track)..its probably just as selective as cuny honors. you can apply to both programs (cuny honors and sophie davis at city college) but you're only allowed to choose one because of differences in the curriculum.

what about Honors Baruch? How does that compare to other business schools (NYU (not Stern), Michigan, etc)..
I know the honors Baruch students receive full scholarship, laptop, etc.... but do they also get free housing? (i.e. their apartments are paid for)? don't they also get a stipend?

gobbledygook, #12: "Over here I receive around $6,000 a semester from various merit scholarships, aid, grants, and other financial perks (this is on top of a paid tuition, so it's all pocketed money)"

Since CUNY Honors includes a full tuition scholarship, do we get to keep any of the money from Federal Pell Grants or TAP, or do we simply not get the financial aid? After browsing everything I could find about CUNY Honors, this was the only post that mentioned pocketing money (leaving the $7,500 stipend out of the picture). Has anyone else who has attended CUNY Honors been able to pocket money from scholarships and other forms of aid? Any help would be appreciated!

yes. if you are a resident of NYC, you are also given the peter vallone scholarship of $1250. any incoming CUNY freshman (those who aren't in honors as well) with a respectable GPA gets the scholarship. because you receive the full tuition scholarship, that money comes to you in a form of a check. if you are in the honors college, you still are required to apply for financial aid every year.

does anyone know about some stats about cuny honors. just a bit concerned for it's a new program. For instance, does anyone know how selective the prog is? (i want some ###s lol). Are job placements good? ANd yeah how can you get the 7500. Do u only get it, if u work for an unpaid intership?

i know you've posted in another thread about baruch, so here are stats from the past two years:

Class of 2009 Honors College at Baruch:
Mean HS GPA: 92.1
Mean SAT Total: 1364

Class of 2010 Honors College at Baruch:
Mean HS GPA: 93.5
Mean SAT Total: 1386

These numbers will most likely increase for the Class of 2011. Keep in mind though, the only people who get in with a GPA less than about a 93 come from very competitive high schools throughout NYC, where courses are not weighted. Also, Baruch gets the most Honors College applications out of any CUNY.

And no, that is not the only way you can receive the stipend. However way you can prove to the respective committee that you need the money for 'educational' purposes can get you it pretty easily.

I know about the SAT and GPA stats, but I am referring to the selectivity stats, like how many ppl applied and how many got in. Lolz. And about the money. So ppl who go to honors can get the 7500 in addition to 1250 from peter vallone? And what about the pell grants and TAP, do they also get all of that money? Wow, that would be hot, it's like u get paid to study. Lolz. Hey biggyoy. I know that you are in baruch. So give me a honest opinion. How do you like it? Are the classes hard? What about the teachers and the program itself? Do you really feel like if u were in a liberal arts school inside a big school? Pretty much, does the honors prorgram practices what it preaches?
HAHAHAH I might be 2 annoying for all these questions, but hey I am still in the dilemma of choosing stern or baruch.
Anyways, thx for ur previous answers.

hey biggyboy it seems to me that u wanna transfer to NYU. At least that's what I saw when checking ur previous replies in NYU transfer forum. Are there any reasons for such decision? Hey this mihgt be 2 personal, but I just wanna learn more from pther ppl's perspectives lolz.

if u read carefully, you wouldve also noticed that i am considering withdrawing my application. the only reason i applied as to transfer is because i really want to dorm. honestly, i do enjoy my time at baruch. so my reasons for transferring have nothing to do with the school itself but moreso concerning the living situation. however, if i do not get enough aid from nyu, i will definitely not be attending. my situation is different because ive made some great friends at baruch and although i know many folks at nyu, the overall environment sometimes dissuades me from even setting foot on campus. i enjoy the program and honestly honors student get treated like theyre kings so its nice...you don't feel like some number in a big school. at nyu, especially stern, too many competitive students is annoying. the school is also filled with oriental/indian kids which can be annoying because i need some diversity.

hey biggyboy, is there anything that u can do b4 u attend cuny honors, i mean is there something u can do in the summer b4 u go to school? I think there is something called the freshmen orientation. But anythin' else besides that? And hey what about the cultural passport thing, does it come in handy?
