Curb Scholarship

So I got an email this morning thanking me for my continued interest and telling me that I was selected as a semi-finalist for the curb scholarship. Seeing as how I only submitted my common app for the RD round, I'm wondering if it would be a waste of breath to write a 750 word essay for it by March 5. So are people randomly selected? Do people who get selected actually have a good chance?

I’m also a semifinalist, and while I’ll definitely apply, I, too, wonder what the chances of actually getting the scholarship are…

dude1977etc, you have to be kidding! out of 28,000 plus applicants you are a semi-finalist for merit money and you are hesitating on putting your absolute heart in a 750 word essay? Dig Deep, Dude. There has to be a few reasons the Vandy admission team sees potential for creative leadership in you. Congrats Aeschylus, and best of luck to both of you. Whether selected for this honor admission or not, being a semifinalist can only help you. Cancel some plans…I know how busy seniors are, refresh your mind and give them something to read that is representative of your spirit and quest in life.

Well, I honestly didn’t ever think of it like that. I guess I’ll dig in a bit and write a good essay.

But does anyone know how many are roughly chosen as semi-finalists? And how many are ultimately chosen to be Curb scholars?

dudeetc this is called An Opportunity. Not only are you under consideration for 8000 off tuition to up to full tuition, you would be invited to be part of a wonderful program that would give you all sorts of leadership training salons and seminars, access to some of Vanderbilt’s most wonderful alum and Nashville partners and the opportunity in a recession for access to outstanding summer internships. Keeping in mind that Duke son got something like close to zero invites back when applying randomly for internships the first summer he tried, you are likely unaware of how hard it is to find meaningful work experiences in the summers you are an undergrad.

The Curb Scholars program is relatively new so you should not consider what they did in 2010 to be rock solid as a predictor in terms of numbers of finalists.

The question is really can you imagine yourself contributing to the Vanderbilt scene and beyond as an alum and does the idea of being selected for a four year creative leadership program that you would have the freedom to define for yourself excite you?

You don’t have to promise your first born child. You are allowed to take another offer in March and April besides Vandy’s even if you are selected as a finalist.

Someone on the admissions committee flagged you as a possibly good candidate for this program. The rest is really up to you. Vanderbilt is not the only great university in the USA at all, but it is a wonderful wonderful place to be 18-22 if you value a city full of artists, a good business economy, a tight town gown atmosphere, an undergrad school enriched with graduate schools of law, medicine, divinity and business steps away and showcasing their own speakers and forums weekly.

Veracity is the heart of any good application. Dig deep and imagine what you might do with this opportunity and don’t be a stranger to the committee. Visualize ways you would use this opportunity at Vandy and if Vandy was your alma mater. Write well, edit, rewrite and good luck.

Curb Leadership Scholarships: The Curb Leadership Scholarships are awarded to students who place creativity at the center of their lives and use their talents and leadership to transform their communities. Scholarship committees will review potential candidates for this scholarship program during the month of February with notification to all awardees by mid-March. We anticipate that we will make 8 – 10 offers in the Curb Program.

I am the parent of a Curb Scholar and it has been a positive experience, most notably for the interaction with the other scholars. I cannot imagine why anyone would not pursue an opportunity like this. Good luck.

glad to hear that being part of the Curb Scholars has been a positive for your Vanderbilt student. Vandy has many niches for many kinds of people to receive time and attention from the faculty and the people of Nashville.

Well I completed and submitted all my forms now. Just a question, seeing as how the last email I received was only for semi-finalists, does this mean that if I were a finalist they would have or will send another email?

I’m really confused right now. I received an email from Vandy last month telling me that I was a semi-finalist for the Curb Scholarship and to do the whole essay application thing, but I never did. Then, I got the Chancellor’s Scholarship about a week ago, which covers all tuition. But then today I received another email telling me that I was named a Curb Scholar, even though I never turned in the required materials?! Did I get this email on accident? And if this is $8000 off tuition, does that mean I get both scholarships, so a total of around $48,000 a year? I don’t mean to sound ungrateful or anything, i’m just really confused!

Jenny…gobsmacked why you wouldn’t bother doing the Curb Scholar essay and paperwork. so many other students with high stats would love to have had this shot at a discounted tuition plus free leadership training.
Why are you posting here? Call the admissions office pronto and put your question to the right people. Yes, it is possible you are designated as both, but you only know when you ask. If you know the accepted student visitation dates, get your hotel booked for one of them in April

I know, I know, I just didn’t ever think I’d get it since what, like, 11 people get the scholarship? Plus, I had Chicago giving me money so I was dumb enough to think it wouldn’t be worth it. But yeah, I’ll call the admissions people!

Nothing wrong with Chicago as a school but hard to beat the Chancellor’s deal. (our son is one)
Sorry to rub it in but can’t resist pointing out that you went from having a 16 % chance of admission with a less than 1-2% shot at merit money to probably a better than 50% shot at getting merit money from Vanderbilt (with implied success re admission) and you didn’t fill out the paperwork?
Just thinking about the two Natl Merit Scholars with 35 ACTs who were not admitted last year that I personally knew.
Keep all your options in full play.

I get it, it was foolish of me to not take advantage of something I was lucky to be considered for at all. Just wanted to say one last thing in my defense, however – I heard back from Chicago in December, was named a university scholar, so I have around $50,000/year with the national merit included. I just really didn’t think I’d get any more money than that so I decided not to do it.

well, congrats on your terrific invitation at Chicago. That would indeed tend to obliterate most other offers. Keep in mind that Vandy will still offer discounted room and board if your EFC indicates you still need more aid beyond the Chancellors/
You are enjoying some wonderful options! take care!
