<p>I've been very curious on this for awhile-
Does the fact that there are about 50 percent Caucasions at UCSB and only 20 percent Asian mean that they tend to accept more Caucasians over Asians? Or is it just that Asians tend to decide on other schools like UCI and UCD over UCSB?</p>

<p>AYEITSJ, I've been thinking about this since my son applied to UCSB two years ago. Talking to my kids about where their friends (Asian and non-Asian) applied, and reading posts here on CC about where Asian kids in California have applied, my feeling is that Asians tend to choose Irvine and Davis over Santa Barbara, with Caucasians doing the opposite. (Just a trend, of course. Still lots of both at all campuses.) My theory (as a parent) is that Asian parents may discourage their kids from going to UCSB because of the "party school" reputation more than Caucasian parents do - and it kind of snowballs from there. But that's just a theory. </p>
<p>I seriously doubt that the admissions offices at the various schools have any preference one way or the other.</p>
<p>Agree with Kluge. I was at the UCSB scholar's day and sat next to an Asian family. The mom kept saying her son wanted to leave ASAP, he prefers UCB.</p>

<p>Geography plays a role, since Orange County is 15% Asian (11% overall in CA), while Santa Barbara County is less than 5% Asian.</p>
<p>As I'm sure you've heard, the UCs are not allowed to consider race in admissions.</p>

<p>If I'm not mistaken, while the majority are not Hispanic, there is a higher percentage there than at the other UC's; Something like 16 percent I think! Also I believe URM's (including my D) applied there this year in greater numbers than at other UC's.</p>
