Curious on chances on: at least a UC Irvine.

Hello. this is my first post, but i have been scrolling around this forum for a while. And, with the pressures of senior year and mom upon me, I decided to ask here...

I just ended my junior year. Just curious how i am looking so far for getting into UCI. (if i don't look good for UCI...then can i see the chances of getting into UCSB or UCSC??

majors i intend to pursue include journalism or landscape architecture.
thank you,

lemon

***i do realize my grades are LOW in physics. I am currently in the process of making up that class (it's UC transferable, i believe. must double check with admissions office..) via community college class. what a mistake....

oh, and here are my future plans before anyone can jump to conclusion:

-took SAT I yesterday.
-gonna take SAT II's Literature (again), US History (again), and Math II in october.

CIRCUMSTANCES/ETC...

-economy hit my family REALLY hard. (yes, I probably know it's an excuse of thousands of applicants this year. But. i genuinely feel it has hampered my academic/school performance, emotionally, practically, opportunistically. My family, income wise, i think, sunk from lower middle class to upper or medium "poor" class...)

-first generation. (unfortunately, i am asian. which means, competition is VERY heavy...)

_________________________________________________________________________________________-

any comments, constructive criticism, advice, words are appreciated. I am the oldest of my family, my parents never went to college, so this is going to be a deep plunge on the fall of 2010. (i am first generation.)

thank you for any help or advice. I am open to any response.

lemon

is my post hard to read? Or nobody is answering because I am a jerk? Or is it that the D’s, even when about to made up, screwed my chances for a UC?

I apologize if i did not seem polite in my post; i was anxious to know at this moment my chances.

thank you,

lemon

up the SATs, GPA too… a D does NOT looks well on your report card. Find someway to compensate for it.
You might be okay if you have strong senior year.
ECs look okay though.

California resident?
Chance me back please.

I believe you need to retake any A-G class you did not get at least a C in for all UCs.

Irvine will be tough. With a 2000 I would say you have a chance. Their average UC GPA is 3.9 though it might have gone up this year. Average SAT is about 1850. So the more above average your SAT score is, the more it will make up for a below average GPA. Having taken challenging classes helps too.

Given the budget crisis, UCI will probably continue to accept fewer freshmen this year and we will probably see stats there rise. I’d say you should focus on UCR, UCM and UCSU plus some CSUs.

I think you might be okay. Irvine is not impossible to get in, but a higher SAT (2000 is decently good for irvine) coupled with a retaken AP Physics and 680~700 on all SAT IIs would help.

Genre: I am making up the physics class for the summer. (at a community college, UC transferable it says…)

and i do live in CA. :P

I’m new at this, but I intend to hit Irvine, Riverside, and Davis myself (with emphasis on Davis)

Until I hear about my finals, your UC weighted GPA is very slightly lower than mine, but your unweighted looks a little ugly

Like the other guy said, bring up your SAT I to near the 2000 ballpark and make up that physics, and I’d say you’re ok, considering your EC’s are pretty good.

Oh, and I don’t believe this that they take only the “smart” asians. I know asians arent a URM at most top UC’s, but to intentionally disqualify someone because another of his same race/ethnicity is a stronger applicant smells of racism to me.

And PLEASE chance me back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/724868-can-i-get-into-good-uc-goal-davis.html#post1062675281

Honestly, I don’t think you have a very good chance at Irvine, even if you make up physics. Your extracurriculars are not very good, and neither are your awards. If you can write a kickass essay about how the economic crisis affected you guys and how you made it through, that would be the deciding factor in my eyes.

Keasby,

thank you for your brutal honesty: I wasn’t so sure about what i can offer for UCI either. Which is why my only other hopes for this school (since I only have senior year left) are the essay, the SAT’s, maybe start a new club or organization here or there.

Um, I think I know my plans for the college time. Here’s a VERY ROUGH sketch of what I have in mind…

SUPER SUPER REACH (that’s if the hand of god decides on my favor… lol :P)
-UCLA

REACH
-UC Irvine
-Occidental College (?)
-UC Davis

MATCH (not too sure yet, havn’t really found more colleges.)
-UC Santa Barbara
-UC Santa Cruz
-Cal Poly Ponoma

SAFETY
-UC Riverside
-CSU Long Beach
-UC Merced

thank you for any feedback, however good or bad it is. I’d rath (My plans is NOT to graduate after 4 years anyways… I plan to attend grad school for either master’s or doctorate degree…)

Well, what classes do you want to take for your senior year?

I don’t know about “chances”, but at this point my sons profile looks like it will be not unlike yours, and I’m (secretly) praying he might get into Cal Poly Pomona. What’ll make it tough is, he is outside of their catchment area, and may not get enough points with his UC GPA (around 3.1) and his SAT (1600 on PSAT as an early sophomore) to bump the people Cal Poly guarantees. I think all of the others you mentioned, except perhaps UCM or UCR, will be far from certain for him. I don’t think the lower UC’s put that much weight on EC’s and essays, at least up to this point. Nor will race be a factor (and my kids urm). First gen WILL be a helping factor for you. Do you live near the CSU’s you want to attend?.

oh. my senior classes I have in mind include:

AP Government/Honors Economics
AP English IV
Journalism
Leadership I (student government)
Concert Band
[insert class here] : I forgot what was the last class I signed up for, lol. :P

If anyone needs my freshmen grades info, here they are:

Pre AP English I… B-/A
Honors Geometry…B-/A
Planetary Science…B/A
Concert Band (yes, I did that freshmen year too… I’m not doing marching band my senior year, so I pretty much got demoted. :stuck_out_tongue: then again, I took a break from band this year…) A/A
Theatre Arts I/II… A/A
Computer Apps/Children’s Literature… A/A

Thank you for any feedback,

as for the calstates, i live fairly mdeium distance from any.

nearest is cal-state san bernandino (DO NOT WANT TO GO THERE). then, cal state LA is 60 miles away, then there is cal state fullerton, pomona, etc…

OK.

I am worried sick about those goddamn D’s. (WORST MISTAKE IN THE LIFE. Took it cause my friend wanted me to. Then again, he already finished AP Calculus this year. C-'s mean I was a bit lazy. That physics class, even with much effort from homework, studying etc… Impossible to get A’s in.

How serious is it going to impact my credibility to the UC’s? I m making it up in the summer at community college, and going to make it up during the school year. I am making those up despite the knowledge that they do not count in the UC gpa calculator.

ok, need to add:

became a staff writer for my school newspaper.

currently have around 85 volunteer hours under my belt. i think.

Do ANYTHING you can to bring up your academics. Especially the SAT, since you can’t do much any more about your GPA, except make sure you have a strong senior first semester. You have a shot, good luck.

raise ur SATs. with a 2000+ u probably have a really good chance in irvine. if u think ur worried about ur grades, a senior that ran with me in cross country had a 3.5 GPA and a 1600-1700 SAT score. not that much community service or EC stuff, but still got into UCI. its not impossible, but u got to put that effort in and hope for the best. the AP Physics thing is like a life lesson isnt it? dont take classes when u know ur not prepared for. although it does look good to have a hard schedule but it comes down when ur grades arent that good. with that said, raise ur SATs and have write kick ass essays, and u’ll be good.

I think you are good for Irvine, as people have said before me, a 2000 SAT would do nothing but further cement your acceptance.

Please Chance me back!

UPDATE: I got my results back from the June SAT test, and well…

let’s just say I GOTTA take the SAT one last time in November. I am going to study for the ACT as well.

Question: What’s a safe score to acheive in ACT for the middle tier UC’s?

thank you,
