Congrats to both of you!

Appasi, my daughter is now a sophomore at NYU, but we’re from Oregon, and so had to deal with the storing issue last summer, since there was no way I wanted to ship home everything she had purchased over the year! The best thing to do is look up companies that do summer storage - there are a lot of them. Just make sure you check out the reviews! They will deliver boxes or crates to the dorm, students pack them, and then they will come pick them up, and redeliver them to whatever address your student is staying at in the fall. It really is quite seamless, and altho it seemed spendy, it was a LOT cheaper than shipping everything home and back. The companies that store in New Jersey are cheaper than the ones that store in Manhatten, since your student won’t have to access anything over the summer. It is possible that some of them might even be listed on your college website.

For those of you wondering about costs in NYC: outside of the food plan, food is expensive in the stores, though cheaper than buying the same through the meal plan. My d does some of both. All services, including haircuts, etc, are more expensive, about double the cost of stuff out here in Oregon. And you need to factor in subway costs if your student is going to do any city movement:$2.50 for a one way ride. And for those of you new to the college process, it’s hard to do the first term, but after that, buy used texts on Amazon and then sell them back!!! That really lowered our textbook costs!

This question is for anyone at MMC- what meal plan did you get? The basic is $1000 a semester- is this enough? The hours seem limited. Do you use the alternate restaurants listed and if so is this more expensive? Thanks for your help! My S (BFA acting) is so excited about going to Marymount!

My D is graduating from the theatre/Mt program at Marymount next month. She lived in the 55th street dorms her freshman year only and has been in an apartment since then. We were required to have the $1,000 per semester meal plan her first year. My D is a vegetarian so she actually shopped and did a lot of cooking when living in the dorm. She would get pizza and pasta with her mealcard and she used it to buy things from the convenience store in the dorm. At the end of the second semester she was struggling to spend the remaining balance so she bought laundry soap, toilet paper and lots of cleaning supplies for the apartment she was moving into.

Thanks for the info!

HELLO! Sorry my account got messed up and I had to make a new one. Acting wise my class has been a lot of using your “natural voice” and “living truthfully” and getting to places in yourself you didn’t know existed! My acting class is about knowing what you want and knowing how to go there. we do some movement stuff but I’ve never had to be a tree or something lol. Normally you do a scene and you have papers on your characters and about the era. Every teacher is different and what not and don’t give papers. The only thing I dislike about my teacher is he tends to baby us which works for some. Some want to be pushed so hard they come home crying so it’s up to you. I LOVE my voice teacher. His name is Stephan Purdy (google him). He’s amazing and taught me so much about technique (which I didn’t have much before). He’s very nice and is great at helping my breaks become non existent in my voice (-: The only thing I dislike is the lessons aren’t at the school so you have to travel to get to whereever your teacher lives but in that sense you get to be more independent and really feel like a New Yorker. Anything else let me know. I promise I won’t be so late in responding.

5 Hello! I know only 2 people in my class taken off the waitlist but the chances depend. This year was a lot more selective to get in, but I know people who are amazing and should have got in and went here for theater then reauditioned and got in which is even more selective but you can do shows here and they get to know you. To better your chances I would send and email to admissions and say how you enjoyed the auditions and how MMC musical theater is your top choice and thank them for your consideration. Maybe they’ll bump you up? It’s weird because it just depends on what type of spots to fill. If they have a million female belters and want sopranos who aren’t as good they might take a soprano over an extremely good belter! Good luck though! my friend just got taken off the waitlist so you never know (-:

7 I would email them, you could email Pat Simon (or whoever auditioned you) and say thank you for the audition and you had a great experience and you can’t wait learn theater at MMC next year. (Whether you choose to go or not) It might help you out. I did that last year. I wasn’t on the waitlist and didn’t get a letter but I made it seem like “you are letting me in” and i did get in. So you never know! I would also send an email like that to theater arts admission. It just makes you seem like your willing to learn (-: Good luck and I hope it’s helpful!

Congrats! There are usually 4 or 5 kids who are BFA with MT minor. It’s a tough program but as long as you work hard you’ll do great. I know my class of MTs is larger and has about 37 kids and I’m not sure about the BFA program maybe around 40? Pro’s- lots of great professors, daily dance, artistic people, great voice teachers, living in NYC, not a major so on paper it’s easier to get jobs that are non performance while your waiting to get performance jobs, you learn more than just acting but other aspects of theater. Cons- not many performance opportunities (they are trying to change that), people can be judgmental (that’s with any program), commute to voice lessons, crazy schedule. Hmmmm I love MMC and love 55th dorms. I also love daily dance (-: It’s such a good workout and you won’t find that with many programs. I have so pros and cons if you look above ^ I love walking to classes and feeling a like a feel new yorker. I really feel like my acting has improved so much and as a performer I have grown in my natural voice and in my vocal technique. The freshman get to do a showcase im doing now and It’s amazingly fun. Sorry if this answer sucks haha I’m trying to think of more experiences. There are a lot of fun places to be if you don’t want to hang in your dorm. I love that there is MT history class because I want to learn about history of theater. I do dislike my lighting and sound class. It’s a major hassle in my life but I’m learning it’s just not my thing. All the teachers are very personable. any more questions let me know
Lyndsi
ps. MMC helped me find out who I was as an artist and how to charge of my life as an independent person

Just performance, no MT but you can reaudition next year if you want to (-: I honestly think the BA program is great if you want to have the chance to study something with performance like technical theater and costume design or directing. More jobs that way. I wish I liked other aspects of theater so I could do that haha. good luck (-: any more questions let me know.

To be honest. NO. I got through it at least 3/4’s of the way through. I also am terrible with snacks and stuff so it all depends on what type of person you are. The C store at 55th is full of temptations so if your good at avoiding that the meal plan at 1000 will be good but if your like me and never had that much food at your disposal in your life its a bad choice. of course when I run out my parents make me fend for myself or they bring me groceries every month and honestly its cheaper to live on groceries from home then the meal plan.

Very well! me and my roommate both have similar morals and it worked out GREAT! we are best friends. BUT warning…that’s not aways the case. you could hate your roommate and worse comes to worse you move out into a different room. Some people have such a bad semester because they put up with a bad roommate and I say your paying 15,000 dollars a year for housing you make the best of it and move rooms if your not happy. It’s the luck of the draw honestly. that was my biggest fear as well but you have to be strong and just accept what happens and don’t just stand around and complain if it’s not working. hope this helps and good luck! hopefully you’ll be really good friends or at least friends with your roommate

Hi! I’m not a MT or Acting student, I’m actually an incoming English major first-year at MMC. I recently received my schedule and it was a little dismaying because I had many classes that I felt were extraneous in accordance to my major (like Western Art and Ethics). I was wondering how flexible the schedules are at MMC, and whether I can drop classes and register for more writing courses?

Hi! I’m aware that you have quite a few questions before mine, so feel free to take your time :)

What I would really like to do is double major in Theatre (Performance Emphasis) and English with a minor is MT and Business. (I’m aware that that would be a very hectic schedule and it may take more than 4 years, but I’m willing to put in the time and effort.) Is this even a possibility? Does MMC allow students to take on this much?

Thank you!

Is it possible to attain a BA in Theatre Arts with a MT minor and an english minor? If it is possible, would it be too demanding?
