@elguapo1 - But that’s just tution. Just tution at Berkeley was only $13,500 for 2016/17.
Whatever way you look at it, it’s about $10K a year less at Berkeley. Overall, about $40K less for the entire degree and as I said before, that is without all the ‘extra’ costs that are listed on both of the universities websites as living expeneses etc…
@elguapo1 - I think I can see where you are getting confused. I did not say $60K pa. I said $60K overall. As in, $60K more expensive for the entire degree after 4 years.
$20K of that comes from the extras that are listed on the websites. That could be up for debate, as it is all speculative about how much each person spends.
$40K is not up for debate. It is $10K less per year at Berkeley meaning that a degree from Berkeley is at least $40K cheaper.
@scratchy903 You are the one comparing costs not me… I am telling what the costs are at St A’s, I asked you in the first post was $32-$38 k room and board competitive with UC. If it isnt it isnt, but then dont tell me my numbers are mistaken as I am the one writing the checks. Good luck with UCB.
None of this means that we won’t be considering St. Andrews, but it certainly does factor into the decision.
@elguapo1 - No need to get snarky. I never said your numbers were mistaken, I said I didn’t think you had understood a point I had made about the comparable overall cost.
I appreciate all the insight you have provided and was just trying to get my head around all the numbers and understand why some people seem to think that cost of attendance at St. Andrews is comparable to an instate UC when it clearly isn’t.
Your infomation has been very helpful to me. Thank you.
FYI in terms of socialization, making friends, and immediate immersion, I would go for the standard catered double even if it wasn’t the cheapest option. The traditional catered halls have all meals together, special meals, parties, and so on. My kid is moving to moving a private house next year with all girls from her floor.
Thanks @VickiSoCal
What type of accomodation she goes for is also something we have to look at. So many people have said to go with a catered double - for socialisation and immersion etc. but my daughter does like her ‘alone’ time so I can’t make my mind up whether a double or a single would be better for her. She is very social, but also really needs some down or alone time in order to recharge her batteries - she has been that way since she was a baby. I guess only time will tell. She’ll have to pick one and see how it goes!
also, iirc housing is not guaranteed after the first year- there is a lottery for the people who want it after that. The vast majority of students live out, in shared accommodation, after 1st year. @VickiSoCal - correct me if I am out of date on housing!
They have built quite a bit. My understanding is almost everyone who wants to stay in university owned housing can. The town is putting a lot of pressure on them to provide more housing by limiting the amount of private rentals in town.
However most returning students go in to apartment style self-catered lodging.
My daughter is renting a 4 bedroom house with 3 other girls at 500 GBP each/month from a private landlord.
For all you potential hedgers out there, the pound is back below $1.35 this am.
And I transferred 5000 to my kid’s UK account yesterday for next year loving expenses at 1.36
Oh well better than the 1.40+ it was at last time I had to move money.
And for the market technicians - it also broke its 200 day moving average to the downside after having traded above that level for over a year. Normally a bearish sign.
@VickiSoCal I was even less patient - last Friday am at 1.375
Pound almost broke 1.33 this am.
Another public service announcement - touched 1.3205 in overnight trading. A new low for this year.
