Hello everyone! I was having a difficult time getting the right information needed by looking up online resources, so I decided to give College Confidential a shot. I am currently a Freshmen attending the University Of Nevada Reno and I am going to attend De Anza community college starting Fall 2016. The reason for my transfer is because I plan to transfer to a 4 year college in California after I establish my in state residency. I have family that live really close to De Anza and I heard that CC is a wonderful school for transfers. My biggest concern is that after this semester at UNR I will have a first year GPA of a 2.6 (after already re taking a class over the summer). I am also currently a Biology major. And as of right now I do not know which credits will transfer to De Anza as well. Will I have a new GPA just for De Anza when I start school there? Also, I do already know that when I transfer I will still be submitting my transcript from UNR. And if I were to get an average of 3.5 + GPA average for the remaining time at De Anza would I be able to still transfer to a school like SJSU for Biology or perhaps maybe even UCSC for Biology? I am having my doubts and it has been really been putting me into a stressful situation. I appreciate the advice anyone can give me. Thank you.
Since you are coming to California for educational purposes, you do realize that you will be paying OOS tuition for the CA universities (including the CC)?
You cannot get instate tuition and residency based on your current plans. It is very difficult to gain instate residency in California coming from another state. You cannot accept help from family; you have to pay market rates for your rent. Yes, you have to pay rent and your relatives cannot help you. Your income has to match your expenses/expenditures with required tax records, rent receipts, utilities. The CC’s may be a little more lenient, but overall, the universities will not be so lenient.

California is extremely expensive and you have to hope that you can find a job.
Additionally, the slate will not be wiped clean. All previous coursework grades, taken anywhere, will be averaged with new coursework.
I agree with Aunt Bea - it is close to impossible for you to be approved for instate residency.
De Anza is a good CCC. Classes there will keep a separate GPA from any transferred units. Only after sending your transcripts to the CCC, will they be able to determine if any courses are equivalent. You will start by paying OOS rates.
It’s too early to know what your GPA might be so you should post again with your stats just before you apply.
I believe I can use my biological father who I will be living with to be my support and I plan on staying in California and planning on surrendering all my ties in Nevada and changing my address, getting my license, car registered in California as soon as I arrive next month. Thankfully I’ve talked to some people and researched online that im very lucky to have my biological father living in the area of where my community college will be.
You really need to read up on in-state residency for California. Don’t assume that just doing those few things will give you instate residency. There is a time requirement.
@“aunt bea” Yes I do realize it takes 366 days. Also in the quote you sent me, it said difficult for those who are not financially dependent on a California parent. I will be financially dependent on my father who lives in California. So relinquishing all ties with my current state and registering my address to my dad’s home and then waiting 366 days from that start date will get me my in state residency. Or are you saying that doesn’t work as well?
Assume two California tax years from your father’s entry into California. If you begin immediately, at any educational institution in California, consider being classified as an OOS paying student, both at the CC and the university.
