I'm contemplating whether I should waive the SHIP and purchase my own insurance plan, or whether I should just go with SHIP; I'm aiming for an affordable, yet comprehensive plan. What has your experience been with the Ashe Center? Any complaints about the services you've received?

*I think what I'm most concerned about it is the quality of service...

ashe is fine. i don't think you'll find any sort of comprehensive coverage for anywhere near as cheap as ashe.

you won't.

i highly suggest you don't waive ship UNLESS:
-you live very close to ucla and have your own, very local doctors and easy access to them
-you live fairly close (within, idk, 2 hours) to ucla, and don't get sick much and don't play a sport or do anything injury-prone
-you live further from ucla but are 110% sure that you will never get sick

other than that, just do it. my roomie last year lived in the bay area like me, and hardly ever got sick, but played club soccer. she had a history of injury and fall quarter she screwed up her knee. hassling with her insurance company to get an MRI to determine whether or not she needed surgery was NOT a pleasant experience, nor were getting xrays or physical therapy. winter quarter she went through the ashe center for her therapy and didn't have to run around LA for it anymore (besides, she didn't have a car, so getting to her off-campus doctors appts was not exactly easy, especially on crutches).

it is SO NICE to have a place you can easily get to, with a good level of service. i go there for allergy shots and once for xrays (hey, i'm a klutz). if you live in norcal, do it. if you live in socal, evaluate how sickness or injury prone you are. or just do it. you can always waive it the next quarter if you truly don't need it.

go with ship! my home is very close to ucla but ship is so much cheaper than any insuran e. insurance companies always try to screw you over.

Okay, thanks for all of the input. I've decided to go with SHIP - I'm thinking of upgrading to SHIP Plus now. How has your experience been with their dentistry?

Dentistry is done off campus, but I found that there was an abundance of dentists in close proximity.

I definitely agree to go with SHIP. My D need some care last year and I am so relieved that I did not waive it (coz I almost did to save some $$$). And I am very satisfied with the care they have given. I even managed to talked to the physician. You have a peace of mind that you will have care when u need it. You'll never know what will happen.

Hi. Little confused here. Many colleges health centers offer basic services for nominal fees as part of tuition - strep tests, exam for anti-biotic when you get some bug, quick look (non-xray) to see if ankle is clearly just sprained not broken etc. Can those without SHIP to that at the Arthur Ashe center?

If you need beyond basics, like xrays, PT, appendix out etc, do you use the Arthur Ashe? UCLA Med Ctr? Other?

We have family BC of CA coverage, which is what SHIP goes thru. So why should we pay BC twice?

Go with SHIP Basic. It's just less hassle.

What has your experience been with the Ashe Center? Any complaints about the services you've received?

---> getting eye appointments sucks. i made an appt the other day and the earliest one available was mid/late september... so just FYI !!! do it now

Well, $675 is a significant cost. We're not dropping our family BC coverage, so before paying for SHIP (also BC), I'm trying to understand what the real benefit is for duplicating coverage.

I'm covered under my parents Plan until I turn 24, is it worth it go ahead and get the SHIP as well, or should I just waive it?

I don't want to be running all over the place for treatment, but then again I've only been to the doctor's office 1 time in the last 15 years for anything nonroutine.

I sprained my ankle and I really needed crutches, but since I didn't have ashe insurance, I couldn't get them without paying a huge fee. I think it was going to be around 60$ just to rent crutches. I just decided to try and go without them since I only had one more day of class and the weekend to get better.

I wish I had Ashe in that situation, but as previously mentioned, if you don't do anything that could injure yourself or you are not really sick prone, you could just do without it. I needed to save money so I went without it :(.

My roommate sprained her ankle pretty badly playing club soccer, I think she borrowed a pair of crutches from a friend.

that's me... parents want to save money

On a normal basis, I am 95% sure that I wouldn't get sick enough to go see a doctor. That probably happened maybe 3 times in my life. I can't really account for unforeseen accidents due to sports though, and they happen a lot more often. I play two club sports at UCLA, but I decided to risk it anyway. Not a really good idea... I'm glad the worst that happened to me last year was me getting pink eye for the first time, and I had to pay $25 for antibiotics instead of $8 or something like that because I didn't have SHIP.

I'm hoping my luck will hold out for another 3 years.

i feel its a really good idea to get health ins for the school year but we're already paying too much for the tuition/room and board that even the health ins cost too much

need to save as much money as possible. i might be doing IM sports, but i live fairly close (about a 40min drive with no traffic, but can take up to 2 hours).

Is it a good idea to have no health insurance period? i usually never have to go to see a doctor when i get sick. my parents are cheap like that -_-

Chanx - you should definitely have some kind of health insurance, whether a family plan with your parents or SHIP thru UCLA. Major medical expenses can bankrupt families. To me the question is just whether you need both.

Sofakingwangsta - you have non-SHIP coverage, don't you? If so, you're way ahead for the year. You paid $17 extra for pills, but saved $675 in premiums. But if not, get SHIP. $675 is worth covering the risk of major illness.

According to your and Altema's stories, everyone can USE Ashe, but those without SHIP pay a higher price for services? Do they charge for dr appts or just for things like Rx, lab work, tests etc?

i have the same question as hiker - "those without SHIP pay a higher price for services?"

also, a friend of mine asks me about birth control : girls can get it at the Ashe center, but for how much? cheaper with SHIP? and what is the process - is there a med exam needed?

Buy SHIP. My company(Metlife) handles the health insurance plan. I doubt you can find a similar plan anywhere else for the same price.

Response form Ashe Center:
"In response to your inquiry, the Ashe Center is available to all full time registered students regardless of insurance status. When students are seen at the Ashe Center, visits are prepaid with SHIP. The Ashe Center is not a provider for any outside insurance plan. We do not accept or bill any private insurance. If you accesses services in the Ashe Center, all cost will be billed directly to her BAR account. It will be up to you to seek any reimbursement from your insurance plan.

You can also find information about the cost of Ashe services on the website under "General Information" and "Eligibility and Fee's". "

I wonder if half their time is spent giving out plan B pills.
