Current BC Freshman Answering Any and All Questions

Thanks for answering my question! I have professor duket for honors. Have you heard/Do you know anything about him? Also, are there any events where all of the honors students get together throughout the year?

My daughter didn’t get a first year writing seminar and can’t fit it in next semester because of her perspectives class. Is it ok to take it next year? Her advisor didn’t say she had to take it.

@stanford78 I hear a lot about students saving their arts requirement for later in their college career, as other things start to ramp up. I would suggest one of the departments the bluebayou mentioned, although it really just comes down to personal choice.

@sosas12 No worries! It’s fun to answer social life questions between all the academic ones, I take all questions. For football games, any pregaming will definitely be done in your dorms. Some freshman will know upperclassmen through siblings or high school or something, but the vast majority will be dorm drinking. Just one bit of advice for football days though: never, ever risk the mods on game day. The seniors won’t enjoy frosh company and the school makes sure any freshman caught in the mods on a game day will have zero chance at one senior year. Dorm drinking is always a bit risky but hopefully you have a relatively chill RA and it’ll be smooth sailing.

keep checking BC’s course list. There is a Frosh writing seminar open right now. (MWF4)

But students add/drop every day, so the availability changes constantly.

And yes, Frosh Writing is required unless a student passes out with an AP score, for example. However, she should ask her Perspectives advisor for advice. (Perspectives offers only one credit for English core. And note that a lot of Frosh drop out of Perspectives due to the workload and other interests.)

@peachfuzz Sure thing! I have heard he’s the toughest honors professor, but he is a very good teacher. It won’t be easy by any means, but you’ll learn a lot. Unfortunately, the whole honors program doesn’t seem as cohesive as I thought it would be going in, mostly due to the lack of events where all honors students have to go. There was a play that was mandatory for many classes to attend, but that was it. Honors housing addresses this issue by concentrating the honors experience, if that’s what you want. It wasn’t the living situation I wanted, and opted out. I saw it as limiting in many ways, but a lot of people loved it so it comes down to preference.

Hi! I was wondering what work study jobs students think are the best and how to get them. I’m hoping for a low key one where I can do my home work.

Working in one of the mail rooms would be good for you.

@universidadchica Hi there! I agree with what SaintSaens suggested. A mail room job and some library jobs typically include time sitting around doing not much, a perfect opportunity to literally get paid for doing homework.

Bro - Is it possible to [what we called back in my day] “crash” [just show up] a class that’s otherwise full. My D got a Gen Chem lab that runs from 5:30 - 8:30 PM on Friday! I honestly can’t believe they even have such a section. All the other Gen Chem labs are full. She’s keeping an eye on the Agora course listings, but if nothing opens up she’s thinking of just showing up.

She also got a Fresh Writing Sem that she wants to switch out of but they’re all full too.

Suggestions?

Bro -

One more thing. She’s worried she’s not going to make any friends.

She and her roommate are a great pair and will be great friends. But both of them are finding it harder than they expected to find “friends” - they’re out and about and meeting people, but it seems that it never gets beyond what’s your name, where are you from, where are you living…just the surface stuff and then move on. They’re cute, personable, fun-loving, sociable girls frustrated with the speed at which their social life is evolving. I have counseled patience but would welcome your thoughts.

Thanks.

Keep checking the agora portal throughout the next few days, especially after classes start right up until the add/drop period. People always move classes around, and I guarantee a couple sections will open up soon. You just have to keep checking. Also chemistry is a particularly hard class, so some people will definitely just outright drop the course, opening some more spots in the discussions.

I would suggest she also email the other professors who teach the other labs and see if she can obtain what is called an “override.” Most professors won’t respond to these emails, but some will respond and actually grant you the override (I got one my sophomore year in a science class). If that does not work have her show up at the class or in person in the professors office, so she can ask in person. Friday night is definitely a rough time to have a class, but it is better than my sister’s Saturday morning class (not at BC) that began at 9 am one semester a few years ago.

Excellent advice. Thanks.

Hello everyone I’m a freshman here. I arrived BC on Aug 25th and the last 10 days are amazing.
I have 2 major concerns now.

  1. Is there any student-sponsered textbook resale organization? I believe many sophomore juniors and seniors must have many books they’d like to sell. I bought my textbook for this semester mainly from Amazon and Half.com but I believe it would be more safe, convenient to buy books just from our peers. And I believe most of them definitely have books such as Calculus and Writer’s Presence and Think Python.
Or is there any way to find info about the books students want to sell on campus?

Is there any way I could stay in campus during winter break?
actually I heard there are jobs in summer which provides campus housing during summer however it seems in the winter break the whole school close. However another sophomore friend of mine told me there are indeed jobs in winter which provides housing during winter break.
If there is no job how should I find a place to stay? And suggestion? I don’t want to go back to my country for just 1 month break.

@pinewu
There is no centralized place to buy/sell student textbooks at BC. It’s a great idea, but it hasn’t really been implemented. However, there are some groups on Facebook that have a couple hundred students buying/selling books. I would search for “Boston College Textbook Exchange”, “Free & For Sale”, your school’s group page (ex. “CSOM”), and the different classes’ page (ex. “Class of 2015”). These should all be groups under the BC page. Just go to groups on the left hand side and search for groups at BC.

I also believe there are some jobs during the winter that may or may not allow you to stay on campus, but I really don’t know anything about that for sure. Perhaps email the Office of Residential Life and see what they can tell you.

This may be a dumb question, but how does one declare a major? I’m a sophomore and I’m pretty sure I want to do a certain major, but to get into one of the intro classes I have to have declared that major. Am I supposed to contact my advisor, or what? Thanks, sort of confused here ^^

That’s just how it works during the first weekend. Now that the semester is starting people will begin to settle down. Talk to your daughter in a week or two and she’ll probably have people who she is beginning to steadily hang out with.

Drop/Add is good for lectures, but when a lab is full there literally isn’t enough space for more students. Labs are limited by space and supplies and I would say it isn’t a class you would generally try to get into by just showing up. Keep checking UIS obsessively, someone will probably drop this week!

SaintSaens - Thanks for the validation. That’s what I told her/them. “Keep your door open. The party will find you!”

bcgirl2 - That’s also what I told her and, lo and behold, a spot opened in a lab from 9-Noon on Thursday and she grabbed it and almost all [see above] is right with the world!

Thanks all!

@cocobanana: you have to go to the department where you want to major in and ask the advisor there. For example, if you want to declare for a bio major, you have to go to Higgins and find Kirsten Adrien
