[BC Freshmen Orientation - YouTube](<a href=“BC Freshmen Orientation - YouTube”>BC Freshmen Orientation - YouTube)

This video left a really bad taste in my mouth. Are a lot of people like this?

Let’s be honest that’s pretty much every college…

So I got into BC and I will most likely attend given good financial aid. However, I made the mistake of applying to Economics in CAS rather than CSOM. Is there any way to change schools before this fall?

^^^

Unfortunately, there is not.

Is there a particular roommate finder site that is popular with BC students?

Which campus did you live on as a freshman? Did you like it? Why or why not?

I’m going to try and answer all these in one post:

@jilllll - I’m not too familiar with the philosophy department, but I know a few people who are majoring in that area and they seem pretty happy with the curriculum. As far as I know, it’s fine and does not have any big problems.

@bostoncol17 - I would not worry. While it is true that BC is majority white, I feel there is a bit more diversity than people give credit for. There are a decent # of Asians (even if they do not live internationally). I do not think you will have issues fitting in…also don’t worry about the partying thing. While BC is a “work hard, play hard” environment, I’ve found that there is also a good number of people who are not into it (i’m not a huge partier myself, although I do go out every now and then).

@DK1021 - I remember that video from my freshman orientation, and while I found it funny, it was a bit concerning. However, do not worry about it. While it is true that college (in general) can be like that (ex: the 2-3 girls per guy rule) in a few aspects, that video just pokes fun at them. It is not as real as the video makes it seem.

@gtowner - I’m not sure. I would give BC a call and try to get more info. I do know that CSOM is pretty tough to transfer into.

I’ll answer GoogleBerry’s question in the next post.

@GoogleBerry - I know some people used the site “■■■■■■■■” to check out potential roommates. The Class facebook page was also pretty popular.

As for the campus, I am currently living in a double on Upper (Gonzaga to be exact). I really like it. It is nice to not have to take a shuttle to campus (unlike Newton) and my friends and I enjoy playing ping pong in O’Connell House or wiffleball outside on the grass. The dorms themselves are nice and the cleaning staff does a good job keeping the bathroom relatively clean. There are also lounges on each floor that are pretty nice, and there is even a couple in the basement. There are a lot of people on each floor, but I feel like I know the majority of the guys on my floor.

I’ll also add that I would not worry too much about where you live freshmen year. I know a lot of people on Newton (including a couple of close friends) and they either like it or don’t mind it. Newton also has a few perks that Upper doesn’t (Stuart is a little better than Mac for food, less people on each floor, and more green space). I’ve found that the vast majority of people end up being satisfied with their housing arrangement, whether it be on Upper or Newton.

i have decided to pay BC’s deposit… glad to see you in college!

How difficult to do XC country and orchestra coupled with school work major? Are there going to be conflicts, is one biting off more than they can chew?

What are the relations between the people in the honors program and the rest of the school? It’s comforting to here a voice of someone who is not a big partier like myself, does it make a large impact on the overall BC experience? What about partying in the honors dorms?
Thanks

Would a student who doesn’t want to be around too much drinking feel more comfortable in sub-free? How is it looked upon by other students? Where is it located?

How much trouble did you have maintaining that 3.6? Did you get that taking standard intro courses or did you clear a lot with your APs?

At BC, I feel like you really just get what you deserve. Assuming you choose your professors wisely, not take Organic Chem, and put in a minimal amount of effort, there isn’t much of a reason why you should have below a 3.5.

Congrats on getting in, btw.

My Response:

I am assuming you only went through one year of BC, then? Depending on your major, your GPA can be super high or super low. My math minor lowered mine some, whereas my education major, core classes, and history major made it higher. I graduated with a 3.56, but had to work at it. BC is a tough school and it is difficult. Most of my friends had above a 3.0, but BC is not a cakewalk

Yes, I was in Honors Housing for part of my BC experience and definitely felt a strong sense of community. There are lots of interesting programs (professors, guest speakers, etc.). I’m not at all a partier; needless to say, the closest friends I had were fellow Honors Housing residents.

Honors and non-Honors people interact as anyone else; Honors is probably more “diverse” than the school on average.

Nevertheless, there are parties here and there in Honors, just less “forced”-feeling, if you know what I mean.

i have another question…
i was wondering what the MLEP housing is like and what kind of people are there?

thanks!

HanaasMom,

I noticed anytime someone asks a question about the healthy alternatives housing at Boston College, there is this deathly silence, just crickets chirping in the background. It’s as if people just don’t want to talk about it. I don’t know why. It’s a bit worrisome.

The fact that BC has no Greek system, parties are usually held in dorm rooms, so I think this would be a topic many prospective students are interested in, especially after reading the BC Confessions facebook page which contains submission after submission of shameful regrets after drunk one-night-stands.

If you learn anything about sub-free living, would you mind sharing it here?

Thank you!

Is there anything to suggest the level of this activity at BC is any different than at most colleges?

Grades definitely are course-dependent. Like many/most private colleges, BC’s mean GPA is 3.3+; generally higher in Comm and CSOM, and lower in science fields.

What is the school sprit like at bc? Do you feel pride for your school? Is community service prevalent? How is the sense of community? (Sorry for bombarding you with questions)
