Where are you getting your information that BC has ‘grade deflation’? (You might want to check your sources, bcos it just ain’t true.)

How hard is it to get into parties at the mods?

Depends on your gender and/or connections.

As the mom of a perspective freshman, I am confused to hear that you live in Newton…Doesn’t everyone live on the main campus? How does that work?

60% of freshmen live on upper campus. 40% live on Newton.

Cavmom,

We visited the other day during Admitted revisit day. It is a quick bus ride to Newton campus. It is basically the law school campus and has its own dining hall. Only freshmen live there and therefore it seems as if it is a great one year bonding experience. It is totally random as to whether you are in the 60% or 40% group.

We talked with many upperclassmen who all said the exact same thing…they were upset to hear they had to live on Newton campus but looking back they are so glad because of the relationships they formed.

What is the social life like? If you could go into detail about what the typical party looks like, I’ve heard that they’re rather small, and are often broken up by either the boston college police or the actual police if they’re off campus. Has this been your experience? And are they difficult to get into

So if you are admitted and apply for the housing quickly, can you specify which dorm is your preference and which campus? Are there any freshman dorms that are suite style instead of traditional? At my son’s college, the earlier you apply for housing, the more likely you will get your first choice. True here???

You cannot get a jump on the housing. I think it is all the luck of the draw. I don not believe any freshmen housing is suite style…I know upperclass has some.

Is the dining plan required second semester even if the student has money rolled over for second semester? For example, if student A has $1000 left over from first semester can that reduce the $2000 he is required to buy second semester to only $1000? Also, can a freshman be an RA after one semester?

You pay the full amount for each semester no matter what. I recommend that students try to minimize rollover to the next semester since you don’t get any money back at the end of the year (Diningbucks that are used for vending machines and places like Hillside Cafe will rollover to the next year, though).

Freshmen can’t be RA’s. The RA application process for the following year takes place in the spring.

What do you know about club swimming? How much of a commitment is it and would it be a good idea to do it freshman year? Thanks in advance!

Can some of you give me your opinion regarding pros and cons of not having a Greek system? My daughter was really looking forward to that part of college life.

I don’t know about pros and cons but if sorority life is important to your D she should not go to BC. I think in a nutshell the feeling is that so many clubs, organizations, activities, etc. exist that their is no need for greek life.

Everyone is different but I think schools do have a culture. My D thought she was interested in Vandy but after research, visiting, etc she thought the greek culture was too much. I said maybe it will be fine if you just don’t join but to her it was too much of what the place was about…i get that. Its actually what got her interested in BC - a great school without that culture.
