Current BC student taking Questions

I think there was a thread like this a while back, but I thought I would start a new one now that regular decision is out.
Feel free to post questions about academics, social life, extracurriculars, housing… anything you can think of and I will answer honestly.

Any other BC students, feel free to jump in!

OK, I’ll plunge in with a couple of questions:

 1. How are freshman roommates assigned? Is there a questionaire or is it totally random?

I know some Div 1 schools have student fan groups that you join in order to access tickets to games. (e.g. the “Screamin’ Deacons.”) Does BC do something like that?

There is a form to fill out that asks you some questions. They ask questions like when you go to bed and wake up, if you prefer your room to be loud or quiet, or social or a study room, where you eat, preference for living with a non-smoker. I think there are about 7 questions. They honestly aren’t very descriptive or detailed, but it is better than being completely random like some schools. But overall in my experiences, they match roommates pretty well.

No, any student can get tickets. For example, last season the football season tickets for students were $150. You bought them in the summer, and you go to about 7 home games. Any student can get tickets. You can also buy student season passes for basketball and hockey. Or you can just buy a ticket at each game if you only go to a few, that is what I have done. Hockey games are $10 a game. All other sports are free to attend.

Except for Men’s Basketball, you still need to buy tickets for those.

Hey. I was wondering how freshman orientation was? did you like it? did you make friends there? If so are you still friends with them. What kinds of activities do you do at Orientation? How easy is it to make friends? Thanks in advance!

Do you recommend getting a random roomate or finding one through facebook/uroomsurf?

Do you find the workload to be at all overwhelming?

Do you find that BC has more of a dating or hookup culture?

Is living off campus during junior year really terrible?

Thanks so much!

what are the best freshman halls for non honors students? CLXF loooks pretty cool from what ive seen

Fitzpatrick and Gonzaga are probably the best, because they are the closest to the Upper steps and still have the same amenities that CLFX has. Kostka would be the worst.

Hi, I was wondering if the Freshmen Meal Plan is an unlimited plan. If not, what happens if you go over the projected cost of the meal plan.

“Hey. I was wondering how freshman orientation was? did you like it? did you make friends there? If so are you still friends with them. What kinds of activities do you do at Orientation? How easy is it to make friends? Thanks in advance!”

Orientation was really great. It is extremely well planned and run. It is definitely possible to make friends, it is nice to have some familiar people when you get there in the fall. You are put in suites, so you can get to know those people, and you are also in groups of 10 people that you spend most of your time with. You listen to a lot of speakers, and by the end you will know everything possible about BC. You also have discussions with your group about expectations and college life. Also, a big part is registering for classes, so you will meet with an advisor and pick classes.
I loved orientation, it will make you excited for the fall!

Do you recommend getting a random roomate or finding one through facebook/uroomsurf?
-I would definitely recommend random. All of the people I know who have problems with their roommates requested each other. It is not a good idea to room with someone you’ve never met. People come in with too many expectations. You really don’t have to be best friends with your roommate, sometimes it’s better if you’re not.

Do you find the workload to be at all overwhelming?
-At times, obviously during midterm and finals it can be overwhelming. It seems like classes/schools/majors can vary a lot. For example, pre-med is definitely one of the hardest because they have labs and it is competitive. But overall, I haven’t found it too overwhelming. As long as you do the work, reading, and stay on top of assignments, you should be fine. If you get into BC, you are most likely a good student, so you should be fine.

Do you find that BC has more of a dating or hookup culture?
-Ask anyone, and it will probably be unanimous. It is definitely a hookup culture. There has actually been a lot of talk and a few events about how that could be changed, but I don’t think it will. Yes, there are definitely some people who date, but that is a very small majority.

Is living off campus during junior year really terrible?
-No, not at all. I am not sure exactly they percentage, but a lot of people get 3 years of housing. There is a good off campus community, so that you wouldn’t feel isolated if yo have to. I even know some juniors who live on campus who wish they lived off campus because all of their friends do. There is also a shuttle that is constantly running that goes down comm ave so that you wouldn’t have to walk to campus.

“What are the best freshman halls for non honors students? CLXF loooks pretty cool from what ive seen”
I live on Newton, so I can’t really say too much about Upper dorms. I have been in Fitzpatrick/Gonzaga; it seems pretty nice.

“Hi, I was wondering if the Freshmen Meal Plan is an unlimited plan. If not, what happens if you go over the projected cost of the meal plan.”

As freshmen, you are required to have the meal plan. You start each semester with $2,145. BC is different from other schools in that you pay for each item you eat, instead of swiping and eating unlimited. It really doesn’t make much difference though. Most people don’t have a problem staying under the meal plan, but if you do go over, you can always put more money on your card.

BC senior (sadly), feel free to ask any questions of me as well.

Is it a pain to find off-campus housing junior year? Is it much more expensive than living on campus?

Can anyone tell me more about Carroll in general & its workload, job opportunities etc.?

Thanks :)

Do you like Newton? How is the bus ride? I think the biggest turn off for Newton is the idea of taking the bus in January when it’s in the negatives :/

And if you do the random roommate, when do you find out who it is?

Do you like Newton? How is the bus ride? I think the biggest turn off for Newton is the idea of taking the bus in January when it’s in the negatives
-I really like Newton, I am glad I live here. Yeah the bus can be annoying but overall it really isn’t as bad as it seems. The ride is about 5-7 minutes. What is really great, is they have a website where you can track the bus. So if you have internet on your phone, you will always know where the bus is so you can plan which stop is best to go to and you can wait inside if it is cold. It is new this year and it makes a huge difference. I am so used to it now that I don’t really think too much about it. It just becomes part of your freshmen experience. I just really like Stuart (dining hall), my dorm, and all my friends on Newton. It really has a nice community feel.

And if you do the random roommate, when do you find out who it is?
-I think I found out in early August.

icy492- I am in A&S so I can’t say too much about CSOM. But I know they made a pretty big deal when it was announced that it is the 9th undergrad business school in the country. It seems like you are guaranteed a good job if you graduate from CSOM.
And I haven’t gone through the process of finding off-campus apartments yet.

Ok thanks Green_Apple5!

If you eat a lot, are you at a disadvantage for the pay-as-you-go meal plan?

As a freshman, you will automatically get billed for the meal plan. It’s mandatory. You have the ability to add “Optional Dining Bucks” and “Eagle Bucks” at any time. There’s info on the difference between the two on the website. But, yes, if you are a big eater, you’ll probably max out your regular meal plan each semester. My freshman D actually has the opposite problem…even now with only 1 month left of school, she still has $1,000 left on her meal plan. At the end of last semester, she was helping out several of her guy friends that were out of meal plan money. So be sure you make friends with some light eaters!
