I would assume the B&B’s would be booked by now, hotels downtown are not cheap. You really need a car if you don’t want to pay over $100 per night.

Brown has a premium plan with AT&T and you used to be able to get 5% off per month, though I don’t think many people know/knew this.

Quick Question : How many first year seminars are we allowed to take ( I was going through the list and theres definitely more than one that I like! ) ??

I think you will be assigned one through the balloting process, and then the rest would depend on whether you are able to get into other FYS or not.

AT&T still offers that 5% discount per month deal. I think it’s called the “Brown Fan” deal or what ever. Just tell the clerk that you are a student and they’ll take it from there. I thought the discount would actually be noticeable in my monthly bills, but I honestly forget it’s even applied–I save about $4.50 per month. (AT&T is unbelievably expensive—I’m not sure how far off Verizon is…)

How does this tentative freshman schedule look to current students and alumni? I am an undecided major who’s mulling the idea of lots of diverse majors, such as Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Public Policy, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Mathematics, and some of the relevant joint majors. I also want to continue learning Spanish, but I figure that, for someone as undecided as me, waiting to do that until later may be a good way to open up my exploratory options now.

Aware of the strong recommendation from many students to do merely four classes first semester, I am open to dropping one of these courses if the workload compels it.

As you said, you should consider dropping one given that five is generally a lot of work, especially when you’re getting into the swing of things.

Regarding Math 18–make sure you have a solid understanding of the BC material prior to taking 18. The course is often badly taught, and while help is available, the more you know on your own, the better.

That being said, the courses you’ve chosen are all appropriate, especially if the 1650 professor is good.

It might be worth waiting a year on CLPS0030. Although it’s not a lot of work, the normal professor is on sabbatical. I know that some people in the department would not have continued if it weren’t for her teaching. (In the interest of full disclosure, I couldn’t stand her. She was scatter-minded in a way that I have trouble with.)

@Uroogla: I actually really like the new professor for Intro Linguistics. I’ve had some contact with her within the department, and a few of my friends took a seminar with her.

@Silverturtle: In general, I think that Intro is a weird course because a lot of people come in with misconceptions about what linguistics is and isn’t. Certainly, the professor had quirks, but so do all professors. It was also taught in a very “either you get it or you don’t” way, and I know a lot of people had trouble with that.

Bottom line: don’t listen to either of us and shop it!

Silverturtle: shop other poli sci/public policy classes until you find the one you want. And keep in mind that Econ 110 is offered every semester, so it’s easy to put that off, while other classes are only offered once a year or even every other year. Also, if you want to take a wide range of subjects, maybe don’t take math and applied math at once.

Violator: Brown doesn’t have minors, and if you are doing engineering as an ScB, you don’t have much time in your schedule to take more than one elective per semester.

My son will be sharing a triple suite next year (3 separate bedrooms plus a common room) with
2 other boys (not friends of his). According to the floor plan there is 1 large bedroom, 1 medium sized bedroom and 1 small bedroom. How do they go about deciding who gets what room?? Is it merely a question of who gets there first or is there some other standard procedure for this? Could be awkward I would think–

hayyy silverturtle I’m taking ECON0110 as well! Any thoughts on these courses? Just out of curiosity

Luv2Plant: is your son a transfer? Do the other two boys know each other? I would suggest that they work it out before they arrive - draw straws or do something random. If it doesn’t work out, they can always switch stuff up later in the year.

I assume you’re talking about Hegeman. In this case, all the rooms are pretty much the same, no matter what the floor plans suggest. Sometimes the bigger rooms have weird corners, so the space isn’t as accessible as it seems. Also, you have big closets and very high beds, so there is a lot of storage room.

Draw straws or something if you all arrive at the same time, but if someone gets there significantly earlier, you should figure it out beforehand.

Questions for current students: D will be attending the summer program and living in the dorm for 7 weeks. Will she need a fan? I heard there is no air conditioning…is that true? Will she need a desk lamp or is there enough lighting in the rooms? I know there are shared bathrooms, but is there a sink in the room? Are both beds on the floor or are they bunk beds? Sorry we have so many questions. Thanks!
