New England isn’t a very buggy place.

I’ve heard (from multiple sources) that Brown has an extremely liberal hippie/hipster population/feel to it. Obviously there are going to be some exceptions. But I was wondering if this was true?

Also, how often does it rain? What is the hottest it gets?

I must admit, that after being in the US for a year I still cannot pinpoint the definition of a hipster, hence I don’t really know exactly how many Brown has. However, what I do know is that the student population at Brown is really very diverse, and in my personal experience the hipster scene is not overly dominant (as demonstrated by my lack of hipster-specific knowledge). That said, if you’re looking for a hipster scene, I am sure you’ll be able to find it with ease (I wasn’t).

The weather in Providence is your archetypal temperate climate. It rains, especially in the Spring, however, we are definitely not Bangladesh so you won’t experience any monsoons or the like. It also never gets too hot, like in the South; however if this is your first experience with East-Coast humidity (as it was for me), it hits you quite hard at first.

As someone who lives in New England year-round, I would say that it does get quite humid (it’s not unusual for it to hit low-mid 90s in the late spring, summer, and early fall). If you luck out at the beginning and end of the year and you don’t spend the summer here, you’ll probably be fine. But if not, be prepared for fans and pray that you don’t live over a boiler or at the top of a building.

Providence is the rainiest city in New England.

How clean are the dorms? … I’ve heard from quite a few people that a few (Esp. Keeney) smell of weed etc 24X7… how true is that?

Dorms tend to be pretty clean, depending on where you live. The Keeney bathrooms tend to get a little gross over the weekend.

Smell of weed depends on where you are and the smoking habits of those around you.

Some dorms (Plantations comes to mind) are very dusty in the rooms. The custodial staff keeps the hallways and external bathrooms pretty clean when they’re there, and they’re rather nice, too.

Does Brown provide toilet paper? It’s a random thought I just had.

Yep, Brown absolutely does supply toilet paper in all bathrooms. Word of warning though, it is quite cheap one-ply toilet-paper, so either be prepared to use a lot of it, or if you are one of those people who seriously needs at least two-ply, there is a CVS right next to campus where you can buy higher quality toilet paper. Indeed, I know many people who have happily shelled out some bucks for some Charmin et al.

Not quite…They provide it in all bathrooms that they clean. They might do so for some that they don’t, but we didn’t get any for our private bathroom in Plantations, and I know that they don’t provide it for auxiliary housing.

In Grad Center the custodial staff leave boxes of toilet paper in the kitchen and laundry room which you can help yourself to, even though they don’t clean the bathrooms.

I meant in the freshman dorms, where there is a communal bathroom. Speaking of which, what is a communal bathroom? What does it look like?

A communal bathroom is usually two stalls + two showers + a few basins for everyone of the same sex in a part of a hallway to share. Don’t worry, these are cleaned by university staff and stocked with toilet paper!

Woah, two showers per sex for a part of the hallway? How big is the “part” of a hallway?

For me it was 8-10 people, and I found it very manageable. I only remember having to wait to shower once.

In the upperclassman dorms, you see some of the bathrooms converted (i.e., someone replaces the sign) to co-ed bathrooms, which can become surprisingly fun hang-outs. Weird, I know.

Thanks for all the input guys!
I have one more question: I was checking out this writing course - Critical Reading and Writing I: The Academic Essay

But it has this line at the end: “Banner registrations after classes begin require instructor approval” . Does this mean we cant ‘shop’ the class during the shopping period, and have to pre register in order to secure a place?

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could give me a compiled list of Brown students who are on this site. It would also be nice if one was a History major or somehow affiliated with the CS department. Thanks.

Haitian - look at the beginning of this thread. Many of us introduced ourselves.

I’m CS but not affiliated with History. Feel free to ask questions!
