Current Brown students taking questions!

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I was wondering about Brown’s theatre program… How is it? What type of opportunities are there for students to get involved? Could anyone participate in productions (if possessing enough talent)? Or can only those concentrating in some sort of theatre related area audition? Thanks so much for all of your helpful info!

A couple of threads on theatre at Brown:

Does anybody know about becoming involved with the various publications at Brown – The Brown Herald, The Brown Jug, The Brown Noser? Especially as an undergrad? I might end up going into a science field, but writing is my main passion, and I’d love to be involved with a publication (or two) if I end up being accepted to Brown. Can anybody offer experiences, etc? How does it add to the normal student’s course load?

Those publications are run almost exclusively or exclusively by undergrads. From what I’ve heard, though, the Herald requires quite a bit of time, unless you’re just an opinions columnist. Some of these writers are in the sciences, though I get the impression that most are not.

I second what Uroogla said. I’d also like to add that all my friends who write for the Herald love it despite the commitment – they’re definitely a pretty tight group. The Brown Noser has an “audition” at the start of the semester where you have to write an article and some headlines, or something of the sort (well, I didn’t make the cut, so of course I sound nonchalant about it :p). I know painfully little about the Brown Jug, so I don’t want to misinform you.

Thank you guys! You’re very both very helpful. Undergrad involvement in student publications is an important part of my college search.

Blueroomjunkie, how many other people about try out for the Brown Noser each year? If you knew?

I think about 30 people showed up at that first meeting, but I don’t know how many ended up actually trying out.

What calculator should we get for math 9/10? Are they allowed on the finals?

If I had to guess (and based on a couple of syllabi), calculators are not allowed on exams, but this would vary by teacher. I still make use of my TI-83 Plus from 8 years ago, bust most students I know have 84’s. While an 89 or equivalent would simplify the homework, I’d guess it’d really hurt you on exams if you abuse it.

It has been a long time since I took it. I know I used a TI-83 just fine. I can’t remember if we were allowed to use them on tests. I remember at some point I was allowed to use an 83 but not an 89. Was that the AP? If not, then it was Brown since I know in high school that rule wouldn’t have applied.

Math 9/10/18 don’t let you use calculators on the finals. The homework is also pretty doable without a calculator – I didn’t find my TI-83 until I was packing my room up in May, and I managed just fine with internet graphers/Google’s search engine calculator.

So I just went through all these pages and sports was mentioned once kinda negatively. Why don’t more people go to the games? and how competitive is it to make it on the women’s soccer team? I wasn’t able to find much info about the players and how accomplished they were before. Are they usually recruited or do people join after getting accepted? I just wanted to know if leaning toward sports would help me get admitted :)

Edit… Actually I think there’s a cheer team at brown as well. Is it a competitive team or game team?

If I order my textbooks through Amazon and ship them to Brown, will they be ready for me when I get on campus? Or does the Brown Mailroom get backed up at the beginning of the year (and thus they wouldn’t get my books sorted into my mailbox until after classes start)?

Kdengg,

Certain teams are very competitive In the ivy league (and even a few beyond that). I believe the women’s soccer team is basically all recruits.

I’m not sure why more people don’t go (although it’s def gaining popularity). I loved spending Saturday afternoon at football games and bball games were a nice start to the evening in the winter. Save for s few exceptions (eg duke and Penn for bball, Stanford, jhu for lax) most academic schools just don’t really like going to games because they’re usually not competitive enough and nit enough students go creating a perpetual bad sports environment.

The mailroom is usually backed up at the beginning of the semester. The status on Amazon might indicate that it’s delivered, but you won’t get the e-mail notification from Mail Services till a couple of days later. That said, if you order a couple of weeks in advance you should be good for when classes start. Not sure if you would want to do that if you intend to shop though.

I have ordered books to the mailroom before the term begins for courses I was sure I was taking, but I was also on campus before the freshmen arrived (so there was no delay). The mailroom can be somewhat slow at times throughout the year, so do be aware of that possibility with time-sensitive materials.

Because of the shopping period, many professors don’t even expect you to have books for at least the first week and sometimes the first two weeks. That being said, I’ve actually ordered books on Amazon (with Prime 2 day shipping) once classes started and I haven’t had any problems.

Also, be careful buying books early. My first semester I only ended up taking two of the classes that I pre-registered for once I got to campus, even though I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to do the whole shopping thing. Basically I really didn’t like one of the professors and changing out of that class allowed me to sign up for another class I wanted.

I’m pre-med and trying to decide if Neuroscience should be my major, so Math 10, Chem 33, and Neur 1 are all givens.

Will the mailroom accept my package before school though? If I get the books now, will they hold them for the three weeks there is left until I get there?

Yes. People leave stuff at the mailroom all summer.

Questions about Perkins.

So son will be in Perkins (and is happy about that). That seems to resolve my earlier question about practice rooms and whether or not to purchase a keyboard or synthesizer, since he’s so close to Steinert and Orwig. (BTW, thanks for all your help on that, bruno14 and thefunnything).

From what I’ve read, Perkins rooms are a bit bigger than most (dimensions are ?) and have more room under the beds for storage (20"!!). There is also a kitchen on each floor, yes? Would you say this means he will not need a fridge or microwave in his room? Are people pretty good about leaving other people’s refrigerated stuff alone?

Anything else helpful to know about Perkins and its accommodations and amenities?
