Michelle Kwan went to UCLA, does she count?

Is that it? I never really thought about it in that light. I've been out of high school for too long then. (Actually, not long enough...God I hated high school).

Thought I erased the entire sarcastic I had written that was directed at all high school seniors... sorry!

How hard is Pre Microbiology, Immunology, And Molecular Genetics as a major? Is it insanely difficult to maintain a high GPA? THANKS

To anyone that's majoring/majored in Polisci (UCLAri and kfc?)

how is the class environment? in terms of size, discussions, etc... is it true that most people majoring in polisci plan to go into law?

im just afraid i might feel a tad intimidated...

For a transfer student, I heard that it's very difficult, if not impossible, to switch into comm once you're at ucla. Does anyone know someone who has done successfully switched in after transferring? In my case, I would have all the prereqs for comm once I get to ucla, not to mention a lot of relevant extracurriculars and internships. Is the dept. known to make any exceptions?

Does anyone have experience with the music program, especially music composition? Just wondering if there are any TA's teaching, how accessible the profs are, any other opinions.

Is it possible to defer a year?

N@talie How hard is Pre Microbiology, Immunology, And Molecular Genetics as a major? Is it insanely difficult to maintain a high GPA? THANKS

If you're referring to the pre-reqs for MIMG, I'd say it is pretty damn hard if you don't study. All the science classes are based on a curve, so if you're in roughly the top 20% in each of your classes, then you'll maintain a pretty high GPA.

does anyone have a list of what languages are offered that would fulfill the foreign language requirement?

Does anyone know how hard it is to transfer to UCLA from a california community college, what GPA you do we have to maintain to be competitive etc. And how does housing work for trasnfer students at UCLA? Anything will help. Thanks!

No, you must reapply for Fall 2007 (stated on the website).

Since I'm probaly going here, f*****g spring admittance at Berkeley...

I'm really curious about the environment at UCLA. How is it living in LA for UCLA students? Is it expensive or difficult to get around in Westwood? And are there really significant differences between the type of people that go to UCLA and those that go to berkeley?

im deciding between LA and SD and my major concern is the difficultly of LA. All the top kids from cali come to LA (or berk) and it seems impossible to maintain a really high gpa. For a premed, which school would you recommend? If i decide to come to LA, will it be impossible to maintain a 3.6+ gpa if i work hard? How cutthroat is the competition at LA in the premed courses? Any help is appreciated

SYDB, it is not impossible to maintain a high gpa of over 3.6, just be prepared to work very hard. I'm what you would call a "premed" and I admit I have slacked a bit my first two quarters, but my gpa is still above 3.6; it's doable, you just gotta suck it up and do it. Competition is pretty cutthroat in all the classes it seems, because a GE class for you could well be a required course for someone else taking the class.

Between LA and SD...well, a friend I knew from one of my bio classes was actually a transfer from UCSD and he said it himself that the curve here is way more brutal at UCLA than at UCSD. He didn't elaborate much on how much harder it was, though.

does anyone know about vegetarian options at the dining halls?

They always have at least one vegitarian entree at each dining hall. Sometimes a version of another entree without the meat, sometimes a separate dish altogether. There's also a salad bar for each meal at all the dining halls. So you'll definitely have options.

In every dining hall I've eaten in, there are always vegetarian alternatives plated alongside every entree. Sometimes the chefs just substitute cubes of tofu for meat, or leave out the meat altogether (e.g. for pasta in Covel). Kosher/Halal alternatives in the dining halls are just around the corner as well (e.g. at Bruin Cafe).

I've been hearing that it's almost necessary to have a car at UCLA even though parking is almost impossible to get. So what would be available to a non-Greek male without a car, socially and otherwise?

Okay, I have a question and Im not sure if its been addressed on this thread or not cuz i didnt read the entire thing:

If I am out of state, living in Oregon, and I have some family that lives in Los Angeles, can I somehow get residential tuition after one year? Or are there great barriers to doing this process?

I mean my parents are willing to pay almost full tuition and stuff for the 1st year but it would be awesome if I can get instate tuition for the next three years. Please reply!!!

Unfortunately no, you can't get residential tuition because your parents (i.e. the ones paying your UCLA tuition) still live out-of-state, and that's what matters. Also, you'd have to relinquish your Oregon residency to pay in-state tuition and I'm sure your parents wouldn't want that.
