Is Spanish Elementary1 do-able for someone learning spanish for the first time in their life??

Also, what exactly does "laboratory" mean in language classes?

French classes were just noted as "lecture 4hours", but Spanish classes were "discussion 5 hours+laboratory 1 hour."
Are there any differences between these types??

What's the penalty for cheating in exams?
Also, how often do students cheat and how often do they get caught?

The penalty for being caught cheating on exams is you get booted out of school. UCLA takes cheating very seriously and a lot of classes make you sign a a paper saying that you will not cheat. You can mess up a lot of things at this school and get a second chance, you can get terrible grades, get in a fight, sleep with questionable women and get a second chance. Cheating is not one of those things. That being said, a lot of people do cheat on their homeworks and can get away with it because its not as closely monitored (especially something like a weekly math homework... if you're writing a big paper don't think about plagarizing). They only get penalized in the end because they never learned the material. Basically, don't cheat, it's a terrible terrible idea.

cal86girl,

Lab means you go down to the language lab and use the computers to listen to tapes or something.

dhl,

Students get caught only rarely because only rarely do they cheat. Most people are smart enough to know better.

cheaters are the scum of the earth. zero tolerance policy is good for everyone.

anybody have the link to the restaurants/cafes that take the meal swipes?

All restaurants on the hill.

Dining Halls: De Neve, Covel, Hedrick, Rieber
Boutiques: Rendezvous, Bruin Cafe, Crossroads (or whatever it will be?)

do they have to go stuff at the boutiques?

cal86girl,

labs for spanish classes mean online homework. you can access it from your dorm or apartment. basically, you go to the class website and read a story or watch a video and answer questions about it. in my experience, the assignments took about 20 minutes to complete so it's way less than the hour they say.

jasonx88,

yes, all the cafes have food to go.

Jasonx88:

Yeah, that's what exactly they're for. Predetermined portions conveniently packed so that you're good to go. I guess you could call these cafes.

Meal Coupons
Monday through Friday, you may obtain a lunch or dinner meal coupon (issued at each front desk) to be used at other campus eateries in lieu of your lunch or dinner meal in the on-campus housing residential restaurants. Meal coupons may not be used for concession purchases at Pauley Pavilion.

is there a limit to how many coupons we get a day? can we get both lunch and dinner coupons for the same day for example?

emilary02,

thanks for the info.
But i'm still not quite clear about the language class system at UCLA....

i heard that many classes are taught in that language( like spanish classes are taught only in spanish), even in the elementary ones.

Is starting to learn a completely new language possible???

i mean, are the classes made to teach from the abc's of that foreign language??

cal86girl,

Language classes at UCLA are designed to offer immersion. You will find that starting, say, Russian to be easy and fun even though the professor will speak only Russian from day one. Don't worry, they're not jerks. They won't not answer your questions in English if something comes up.

However, you WILL have to challenge yourself and work hard. It's not a gimme.

UCLAri,

thank you for answering my question.
one more thing.
I'm an exchange student coming from Japan, so i'm kinda confused by the class structure. The description for the language class that i want to take said "discussion", not "lecture".

how can elementary students discuss in that foreign language??

thanks ucapplicant05. the link was helpful.

wheres bruin cafe express located. and the site doesnt indicate whether bruin cafe takes meal swipes. the other places do though.

bruin cafe express is inside of bruin cafe. it has coffee bean ice blendeds, treats, and fruit smoothies.

ekn111: Only one per day and I believe that it's taken from dinner. You also have to get it from the front desk before 4pm. I'm sure that you've realized that the meal coupon is worth $1.65 right? :D

Jasonx88: Every place on the Hill takes meal swipes. Bruin Cafe Express is located just in front of De Neve Commons (the side opposite to the entrance of the dining hall). It's basically a cart that has a subset of Bruin Cafe's menu (coffee and pastries).

namaste: Nope.

I thought Bruin Cafe Express was in De Neve Plaza? At least it was my freshman year...

On the housing website it says the first monthly installment is due on sept. 1...that is only if you agreed to pay monthly on the contract right?
