CURRENT BRUINS to take questions!

ricepudding,

Most people I knew took out loans. You might want to consider filing a FAFSA ASAP.

PXAlpine-

Both Comm Std. and Bus Econ are super, mega-impacted. Admission to each individually is considered a longshot, so I can't really imagine being admitted to both. I'm sure the work load would be managable (well, at least on the Comm side, I cant speak for bus-econ), but your bigger concern is just being allowed to major in both. I don't think it's totally unheard of, but it's really, really rare.

someone said earlier not to go in as "pre-med" or "pre-law..." if, so why not? is it because those two are just incredibly tough? how hard/popular are the sciences at ucla? if you would know, in comparison to berkeley?

prabz21,

I said that because it tends to make students neurotic and tunnel-visioned. Many will only concern themselves with "what [they] can do to get into med/law school;" this will oftentimes cause them to miss great opportunities. Major in something you enjoy. Don't major in something as a first stip to grad school. You'll do much better.

And don't major in a science to get into med school if you don't enjoy it. Major in what you want, but just be sure to complete all the pre-reqs.

Sciences at UCLA are hard, but I don't know that they have the same reputation as they do at Cal. That may actually be a good thing.

UCLAri:
my parents did fill FAFSA. 41000 out of state, about 10000 in scholorship/work study/grants, EFC is about 7000. that still leaves over 20000 to account for....which is a lot for my family....

Wait...if your EFC is 7000, how can your family have to account for $20K? EFC is your "Estimated family contribution."

I'm confused.

Anyway, there is the option of private educational loans if you're dead set on UCLA. Most major banks offer them.

Thanks to UCLAri, flopsy, jyancy, and VTECaddict for your tips!

no more questions from me at the moment, although i'm sure i'll think of more. esp if/when i decide for sure on ucla. =)

We'll always be here...

By the way, I don't think anyone at UCLA has ever double-majored in Biz-Econ and Communications due to the competitiveness of getting into and staying in each major. Correct me if I'm wrong...

There is a great site that has starting to really take off. It focuses on news and entertainment around Hollywood. It also does story specifically for UCLA and USC campus. If you go to www.SNMag.com you can check out all their articles online. I have also heard the are going to start doing a blog and classifieds focused to the So Cal college students. Check it out

I have another question.

Right now, I'm taking 5 classes at a local community college. They're all UC-transferrable (I checked on assist.org). My first question is, how do I make sure these credits get transferred over to UCLA??

And also, most of these classes I'm taking are Bizecon pre-reqs, so when I officially apply for the major at UCLA to go from pre-bizecon to actual bizecon, are these classes that I'm taking right now going to be counted in the UCLA GPA? Or specifically, how will my UCLA GPA be counted since I'm already taking most of the bizecon pre-reqs here at my local CC.

Sorry if this sounded confusing.

PXalpine,

Just transfer your transcripts over, and they'll do the rest.

No, your CC GPA won't count toward your UC GPA. Sucked for me!

UCLAri,

So if I only have 3 more classes left in the bizecon pre-reqs, then my GPA to get actually admitted into the major will only be based on those 3 classes? Sounds too good to be true, lol

Yes, your GPA to go from pre-major to actual major will be based on your courses at UCLA if you have classes to complete at UCLA.

To qualify for honors, does it go by rank, GPA, or both? I got an invitation to apply, but I'm not really sure if my rank is still in the top 3% anymore.

Would it be possible to double major in both a biological science (like Neurology) and a social science (like History)? I did great under the workload I got in high school (5 AP's and 30hours a week at work, still got straight A's).

clapyourfeet,

High school and college are worlds apart, but you sound pretty capable.

Yes, it's possible. It's not always easy though because the classes are far apart (physically as well as academically) and you have little in the way of overlap.

my friends usually major in one and minor in the other. it's difficult to double major in 2 opposite-campus majors and i think i only know one friend who's doing this type of combo and he had to take 5 years to graduate.

On the bright side, you'll get into shape walking back and forth every day.

A few questions-

I'm in Engineering. Let's just say I'm not "pleasing to look at". My weight is beyond normal. That said-

1) How's the social scene for us "weridos"? Or are we segregated? I really really want to break out of the mold.
2) I hate the idea of sharing bathrooms. Any private ones?
3) If we share a dorm with someone else, do we have a bedroom of our own that we can lock? Or do you share the bedroom? In fact do you have a room of your own?
4) I'm the first in my family to attend college in US. Any tips? I've been here for 8 years now FYI.
