CURRENT BRUINS to take questions!

San Jose! high five what high school did you goto?

Hi, here's my dilemma...

I think my biggest choice right now would be ucsd or ucla. i got into bio eng for ucsd, and although i really want to go to ucla, i know that ucsd's bio eng major is one of the best in the nation. i'm not too sure of ucla's ranking in biology. How is UCLA's ranking in their Biology program? Is it considered one of the 'better' majors at ucla? In other words..is the biology program one of ucla's strong fields? do you think choosing the ucsd would be a better choice? also, i'm going pre-med route, if that matters for anything.

thanks!

"San Jose! high five what high school do you goto?"

Lynbrook ;)

Oooh, you go to Lynbrook? I've ran there.

From Mitty. ;)

I've taken the SAT at Mitty :p

Piedmont Hills alumnus here :D

Another Q for you guys!

What are the professors we shouldn't miss at UCLA? i.e. the most talented, most prestigious, most helpful, most quirky, most easygrading, most friendly, etc.

Prof. Corbin (Physics).

In that case which one should we take extra effort to miss?

Hey all,
I have been accepted to ucla (yay!) under the biophysics major, and had a couple of questions....

I like biology, and i like physics, but since the sciences are hard at ucla, am i screwed? am i going to be wiped out? i'm not expecting it easy, but just wondering.

Many people I've talked to are trying to discourage me from attending ucla since the classes are "too large" and I will be another number. Does this matter?

Does the financial aid given change drastically after freshman year? I heard that the first year they lure you in by giving you grants and stuff, but then the next three years are significantly expensive...is this true?

I also heard that it is taking more and more ucla students to graduate in 5 years instead of 4 years due to an overwhelming demand of classes and not being able to get the classes you need. Is is difficult to get your choice of classes?

~i'm going to attend college welcome day so hopefully that should answer some concerns. Thank you!!

There's no doubt about ucla's size, but I'm not sure if the classroom format will be much different at most other elite schools. You've got fat lectures where you take notes, and smaller, more interactive discussion sections to ask questions and discuss (hence the name).

biophys major is pretty lite on requirements for south campus (hit up <a href="http://cis.ucla.edu/studyArea/course.asp?type=MAJ&code=126%5B/url%5D">http://cis.ucla.edu/studyArea/course.asp?type=MAJ&code=126</a> for the details), but some of them will surely need a bit of work.

I've been accepted to UCLA, and I'm fairly sure I'm going to go there, and I have a few questions =)

I read through "The Car Issue" thread, but I still am a bit confused. If I plan to live on-campus, but I plan to commute to San Diego (parents, tutoring job) and Orange County (babysitting job) fairly often, what are my chances of getting a parking permit?

I have also read all the information on the differences between on-campus housing. Can anyone explain the price differences betwen living in the halls, suites or plazas?

Also, as far as I understand, De Neve and Sunset are plazas, and Hedrick Rieber Vista and Rieber Terrace are new Residence Halls but not plazas. Is this correct? And what are the names of/where are the suites in relation to the campus?

Thank you!

Your chances might be a little better since you have jobs there. Just explain your situation and get letters from the people you tutor and babysit for to submit with your application.

De Neve, Sunset Village, Rieber Vista, Rieber Terrace, and Hedrick Summit are all plazas. Hedrick, Rieber, Dykstra, and Sproul (closed next year) are residence halls. Saxon and Hitch are suites; Saxon is across the street (De Neve Dr.) from Rieber Vista, and Hitch is across the street (same street) from the Hedrick court.

Here's a map of all the on campus housing (you can also click on them to get an idea of how the room layouts are):
<a href="http://www.housing.ucla.edu/roomsignup/och-map.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.housing.ucla.edu/roomsignup/och-map.htm</a></p>

Here's the housing rates for 2005-2006 (06/07 might be a little different, but you get an idea of the price differences):
<a href="http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.789d0eb6c76e7ef0d66b02ddf848344a/?vgnextoid=45c51de9e5c32010VgnVCM1000008f8443a4RCRD%5B/url%5D">http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.789d0eb6c76e7ef0d66b02ddf848344a/?vgnextoid=45c51de9e5c32010VgnVCM1000008f8443a4RCRD</a></p>

Hey luckycalicoast,

I don't know much about the parking stuff, but I've heard that it's generally difficult to get a pass and find parking. So someone else is gonna hafta answer that..

<a href="http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.789d0eb6c76e7ef0d66b02ddf848344a/?vgnextoid=45c51de9e5c32010VgnVCM1000008f8443a4RCRD%5B/url%5D">http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.789d0eb6c76e7ef0d66b02ddf848344a/?vgnextoid=45c51de9e5c32010VgnVCM1000008f8443a4RCRD</a> Here's the rates for the various types of housing. From cheapest to most expensive: Residence Halls, Plazas/Suites, Singles (Plaza).

Hedrick Summit, Rieber Vista, and Rieber Terrace are plazas (though the layout is more like a res hall).

Suites: Saxon, Hitch
<a href="http://www.housing.ucla.edu/roomsignup/och-map.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.housing.ucla.edu/roomsignup/och-map.htm</a> There's a map of the Hill. Campus is to the east.

The term suite refers to two things. Technically, Saxon and Hitch are suites when it comes to what type of housing. However, people call the rooms at Plazas suites because two rooms are connected by a bathroom. Or in the case of singles, 10 rooms share 2 bathrooms and a living room.

Ahh.. VTEC.. too quick! lol.. shouldn't you be studying for finals!

hey i was wondering if i could get any input from you guys in ucla or something. i got into bio but i really want to do business economics, both in same college of letters and sciences. is it fairly easy to transfer into business economics? if so, when and how can i do it? can i do it before school starts? thanks!!!!!

what math courses are required for ge?

What is the likelihood of a freshman getting a double rather than a triple? Any recommendations on how to maximize the likelihood of that? The triples seem incredibly cramped and I can't imagine it being very pleasant to live like that.

Thank you VTECaddict & ucapplicant05 very much for your quick and informative responses =)

Two quick other questions - when do we get the application for housing and for parking? After we say we're accepting the offer of admission or before?

Alright, soon to be Bruins..

You should make <a href="http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/NewBruins/NSG_Freshmen.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/NewBruins/NSG_Freshmen.htm</a> a Favorite because it has the run down of stuff you need to do and the links to the places where it can be done (or at least more info).

collegegirlgirl: Business economics is quite competitive. I don't think just anyone is allowed to be in it. Hopefully someone else can answer your question.

4pointer: Math courses are NOT required for GE.

shojomo: There isn't really anyway to maximize anything.. unless perhaps you request only one specific roommate? I don't know. It's really a matter of luck and availability. They do try to match your preferences as much as possible. Plenty of people make it through triples and want them in order to save money.

luckycalicoast: See the website linked above for housing and parking stuff.

oh and btw.. responses may be a little slow this week. ugh. finals. lol... unless there are those of us that are a bit too addicted to this place.
