Current BU students, describe your life at BU!

thanks ^_^ . mind if ask a couple more questions?

how is the workload? Is it intense?
are the classes lecture-based or very involving discussions?

I got accepted to SMG, so if you do know about the freshman classes at SMG, please describe them to me in detail!

thanks again.

I'll describe as much as I can.

The workload is considered on of the more intense at BU, but it's nothing that's not manageable.

Class at BU tend to be both lecture and discussion. Often, there is a lecture twice a week and discussion once a week. The unique thing about SMG is that our discussions are always taught by professors and are case based, just like the Harvard business school curriculum.

As a freshman in SMG you will be taking SM 121/122 which is a year long course. It's called Management as a System and you basically touch on all 10 or so concentrations that we have in SMG. This gives you a broad overview of management and lets you see what the school has to offer.

Other than that course, most people start working on their gen ed requirements since we do have the liberal arts background. You have to take Micro and Macro econ and most people do those freshman year. You have to take two writing courses that you can't AP out of (they serve as a general transition from high school into college writing and are usually only 15 people or so, you get a lot of personal attention).

Average class size at SMG for discussions is between 30 and 40. SM 121/122 is made up of the entire freshman class (less than 400) which is nice, because you get to see everyone.

Everyone in the business school is a business major (BSBA) and picks a concentration (or two, or three...). Mine is Organizational Behavior.

The best part abotu the SMG curriculum is the CORE. Junior year you take 4 courses (all in the busines school) with the same class of about 40 people. You get to know those people REALLY well. You are doing regular classwork in Marketing, Finance, Info. Systems, and operations in addition to working on a new business plan for a new consumer product that you create. The program is very well known and difficult, but rewarding.

SMG is also team based. You will have a team in every course that you are in and you will do various projects, write memos, have meetings, etc. The building is set up with many team rooms for the meetings.

The point of the curriculum is to send you into the real world with relevant experience (not just being lectured at) as a well-rounded and prepared individual. There is a cross-functional understanding of business that we have that is not typical of other business programs.

hope that's in depth enough for you

Wow Lergnom are you Chinese because you sure know a lot about authentic asian foods. asdf I see you've asked about the Asian population about 103059304x and the answer is as I have said before. BU is obviously a predominantly white school with the asian population still at great numbers but if you're comparing to the UC schools in California where the population at UCLA is about 40+% asian and UCI maybe even 60% asian, then the asian population maybe isn't for you. I'm an asian New Yorker too and while the chinese food may not be as good as Big Wong in Chinatown, how bad it can it be? You're probably a girl aren't you because I can tell from the questions you're asking.

lmao nah im not a girl. i'm probably acting like one cause i ask a lot of questions. haha that made me laugh though XD.

thanks lerngmom for your input.

aznmatrix1869, lol yeah... asked a crapload of questions!

mind me asking how you like BU? which program are you in and can you describe your personal experience? How did you feel after leaving home and dorming outside?

I'm not Asian and this isn't CA and BU. The largest Asian percentages here are most likely BU and MIT.
