"And jpps1 isn't? Both of them are talking like prepubescents who've been stealing liquor from their parents' stash for the past four years."

For the record, all eight of Timmy's posts have been either "Where can I score some weed while I'm there?" or "How much booze is there on campus?"

While I may be curious just about how easy it is to drink in the city (if you noticed, I'm 18...which makes it LEGAL for me to drink in Canada, so going out and drinking casually is something I do), I have also asked questions pertinent to academics and housing. The only difference are the latter two are publicized, so I already know a lot about them.

Have you had any experience in dealing with the FA office? Any ideas on how to get the grant money increased? It's my D's first choice school, but the finances will break me.

fortune: I am really into the im scene. THe house activities are good, but just sorta general. Nothing to interesting, just bbq and things like that.

Evitajr1: I wish i could be of more help. I know of one person who got there package improved, but only because there M got cancer and had to quite her job. You can thank our fiscially conservative president for cutting student grant support to fund 122 million dollar fighter planes and a 2 billion dollar helicopter program which we cancelled a billion dollars into it

You guys need to chill out and stop being so critical of these posts. I hope that all of you really don't think that I'm not using this forum as a place to secure people to drink alcohol and smoke pot with. I was more or less testing the water to see what kind of people were posting here, and what kind of person Phoenix is. It's not very effective to understand someone's opinions and personality by asking them "what kind of person are you?" Now I understand more about Phoenix and the other people that have reacted to my posts. I better understand your personalities, and can appreciate from what perspectives your posts are coming from.

How strict are the local (Hyde Park/Chicago) bars on underage drinking? Will I need to buy a fake ID before I enroll, or are there plenty of quality "manufacturers" on campus?
The local liquor store, Kimbark, is not strict at all, as long as you have a fake. The bars are extremely strict, many requiring two forms of ID. The second form can be a school ID or credit card, so make sure your fake has your real name. Fakes are not easy to get on campus, but are easy to get at UIC, a quick 25 minute train ride away.

As for those criticizing Timmy about his fake ID question, please, get real. Stop being critical of somebody's decission to drink and have fun. And don't start with that "you don't belong here" BS that is all to prevalent on campus by those bitter that there are people here that are extremely smart, but are like the popular kids they hated in high school.

Re financial aid: You may want to think of this as a four year effort. Ask FA about merit and other scholarships (and there are some strange ones, a direct descendent of someone who fought in WW I for example), and what has to be done to qualify for more aid next year. This is what I did when I attended (some years ago). I began with all loans, got tuition paid year two, by year three everything was paid. Be nice, problem solve, and work with them. Right now the FA folks are under assault, so I would speak to them once school begins.

what's the best way to get to the U of C campus from Midway?? Any recommendations?
A cab ride. It's cheap, just make sure the cab drive takes you straight down 55th Street (Midway and UofC are on the same street), and doesn't rip you off by taking you on the highway.

You could take the bus (#55), but I wouldn't want to lug my luggage on it. Plus the bus ride can take long, as it stops on EVERY block, and is unreliable.

I am (will be) an advocate of Bacchants at the University of Chicago, but upon realizing that I was on the Internet, I stopped discussing drinking and parties here months ago.

idad, thanks. But my problem is that is the FA isn't resolved better, then my D won't be able to go. I plan on going during the overnight this Thursday, and hopefully can sit down with someone and see what can be done.

Hi Dan, I'm very interested in debate, and I've taken one course in debate and rhetoric over a summer, however, my high school is so small, it doesn't even have a team. I'd be very interested in getting involved in debate at UChicago, and I was wondering, as I believe you said you're a member of the team--how difficult that might be, if one must have some sort of prerequisite etc.?

Hiya Dan!
Writing from bain Hazmanim...(aka stateside for once...though not for long)

Although I already Have the answer to this question...(not in some part thanks to you), how is religion on the Quad?

Yeah, although the campus is not religous, there are a few religious people around (like me, and the four other people I know coming from the wilds of Israel..), and there has to be some born agains., hindus, ects...
