add to that, how much do we have left for ourselves after giving the required amt for the tution? like my work study was 2500, so how much will i have to spend on myself per month?

I was offered 2500 too, must be a magic number

me too. 2500...

That is what I was offered too. Have any of you received any additional information on work-study?

all i know is that we have to find oncampus job through tartan trak which will open on august 1st.. i also heard that i might have to interview during the orientation...

i have the work study too, hopefully we can do research as work study cus that's what I wanna do

is it possible to get involved in research during your freshman fall semester??

I think it's really rare to find any freshman involved in research at any university. But, students--who have the prospects of lab research for later years--are encouraged to keep in contact with a professor, or several professors, with whom they would like to conduct research.

By the way, what are the on-campus jobs like? (not work-student related) I'll be a freshman and I was wondering if it was possible to find a job (preferably on campus) just to bring in a few bucks for spending money. Is this advised against? If not, what are some suggestions?

P.S.- Is it difficult for a freshman to find a job that is not work-study associated? Also, when should I begin my search, etc. if I am able to find & get a job? Thanks

Can I get a work study even though i didnt apply for financial aid?

the library work study app said that they give prefrence to people who have work study for tuition, then to other students

so sound like yes WikiLove

where did you find that c1utch??

This kind of explains workstudy vs non work study:
http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/career/campus_employment/student_pages/workstudy.html
You are paid directly for either one.
And here is the student employment web site:

the 10 character limit apparently still is in effect

Money earned is paid directly to the student employee through either a bi-weekly paycheck or by deposit into a direct deposit checking or savings account. If a student is employed in more than one position, the student will receive ONE paycheck or advice only. Graduate students who have both an hourly and monthly job will be paid once per month, on the monthly payday.

If you don't know what work study is, here is a quick summary -- it is the exact same thing as any other job. If you qualify for work study, then the government will pay for some part of your pay check. Some jobs are more likely to hire you because they don't have to pay you as much because the government is paying for part. I really doubt you can find a research job freshman year just because you won't have any experience, and there are many other students who will that also might be looking for research jobs. I don't know much about what on campus jobs are like but I have had friends working as desk attendants, help desk at the UC, at Entropy, and for professors. For the most part I think there a lot of jobs, so just check Tartantrak once the semester gets closer

Btw, I had 2 research jobs as a freshman. It's definiltley possible at CMU.

oh really! do you have to apply for that, fool? I mean how does the work/internship/research work for an international (freshmen) student (if it is different from any other student catagory)?

fool's right, you can definitely get involved in research as a freshman, but it can be hard to find someone who will pay you. Basically, look for several (at least 5) professors that are doing research in areas that interest you, and email them all individually with information about yourself and your resume. Hopefully at least one will respond. Also, the CS department sends out emails once or twice a semester with CS-related research jobs on campus.

If you didn't apply for financial aid, you can't do work-study (where the gov't pays part of your paycheck), but you can get a campus job. Look on TartanTRAK or find a place you think you'd like to work and just ask them.

Like Waffles said, many student jobs are things like sitting at help desks, checking in library books, shelving things, and being a cashier at the bookstore or Entropy. If you do very well in a class, you may be asked if you want to be a CA (Course Assistant) or TAA (Teaching Assistant Assistant) second semester.
