I just finished my junior year at Cornell. I'm a student in ILR and involved in a lot of things on campus. I have a very boring internship so I'm here to answer any Cornell-related questions. Ask away or send me a private message.

One thing that I've kind of been wondering, how much is it to stay in Ithaca during the summer, as in room and board. I'm thinking of doing research during one or more of the summers, and I wanted to know how much it would cost to stay for that time.

1.I am not a big sports fan, but I would definitely like to get involved around the campus. Any suggestions? I am in AEM btw, but planning to also do premed

Can you get an internship after ur freshmen year and when would you start applying for these stuff.

I signed up for 14meals/wk mealplan, but i read on the cornell forum that ppl struggle to use it all and its better to get the 10meals/wk one. comments?

I play for the school band right now, but i'm not that great and i dont plan on taking any music classes but i would like to join an ensemble on the side so i keep playing my alto. Is there a group/ensemble for me?

you get to pick a PE class where you just play 1 sport?

6.Is the writing seminar hard? like is it anything close to high school english where you write literary essays on novels and shakespeare and analyze themes, or is it more like a class just to help you improve your writing skills, like writing business letters, essays, and nothing on analyzing literature.

Did you pick a roommate, or just let cornell pick one for you. and how did it work out?

Is it really hard to get like a high GPA there? like 3.9 or around.

Thanks

although i didn't make this thread, i can answer some questions here.

IHateS@T,

there are literally tons of student clubs and organizations on campus. also, there are many other social outlets such as playing sports, games, or the parties.

it is extremely difficult for any freshmen to get a decent internship. (if ur talking about finance/business-related internship).

some of the courses for writing seminar, as i hear, have bad teachers who grade hard. but, i thought my course wasn't bad at all and it wasn't any harder than hs english course, although that would depend on what hs u went to.

really depends on the courses/major. getting 3.9 as an engineer or even as a premed is no easy feat by any means. but, as AEM major or even as an Econ major, imo, 3.9 isn't impossible. u need to have good work ethic/aptitude for the subject/and strong interest in the field to succeed. however, keep in mind, 3.9 is a very high gpa and not too many end up getting such gpa. however, with good work ethic and as an AEM major, I think u should be able to pull 3.6+.

thanks, what about internships in the health field, are these easier to land for freshmen? And for my hs english, we read novels and shakespeare and wrote essays analyzing, is this pretty much how it is in these writing seminars? And would a bad grade in the writing seminar hurt me a lot when i apply for med school?

although i don't know much about internship opportunities in the health field, usually, internships are reserved for juniors with solid work experience/resume. but, u should give it a try regardless and see what happens.

writing course here emphasizes on writing, not reading. there may be some other courses that are different, but mine focused mostly on writing analytical, persuasive, argumentative papers. not too much reading of novels like in hs. there was one big research paper also. and, you should not be afraid of doing bad at the intro writing course. usually, it is not so bad and TAs are helpful in assisting you with problems. also, getting a bad grade in any course is bad for med school admissions. as far as i know, med schools are very sensitive about your grades/gpa/mcat. you basically wanna get as high of gpa as possible to have the best shot at getting into good med schools.

There are a ton of intramural sports you can play that are open to students. There are also a wide variety of PE classes you can take as well.

You can definitely get an internship after your freshman year. I know a few guys who are working at JPMorgan and Goldman. It's not easy to do at all but its not impossible to get one either. I would recommend taking an easy job after your freshman year and waiting for sophomore or junior summer for a real full-time internship.

Try the 14 meals per week for the first two weeks of school. If you find that its too much then switch to ten.

I'm not sure. You may want to contact the music department.

Correct. You can take more than one PE class though.

There are sooooo many different freshman writing seminars so its impossible to describe them all. Some are analytical some are comedic and some are about films.

You can pick one before hand if you both agree. Otherwise cornell will pik one for you.

You're in AEM so it may be easier to get a 3.9 when compared to other majors. You'll have to work for it but it is definitely possible in AEM.

How bad is physics at Cornell for pre-meds? I have heard that most pre-meds take either 101&102 or 207&208. How bad is each one?

Discuss the types of humanities courses that CALS students need to take?

How difficult are the CALS college courses, how many are there, what are the categories, and do we need to take one every semester at Cornell?

Also what's an easy stats course to take for the bio major?

Is there an english composition course that fits the med school english requirement while taking care of the oral composition requirement for CALS? Also list some of the interesting/easy (if any) courses in this category for english composition.

It's very cheap (and easy) to stay in Ithaca for the summer. Research and employment opportunities abound, and it's very easy to find a summer sublet for between $800-$1000 for the entire summer.

Peruse Craigslist.

ithaca sublets & temporary classifieds - craigslist

The summer I spent in Ithaca was the best summer of my life. Barbecues every day on my porch, exploring all over Ithaca and Cornell's campus, skinny dipping in the gorges. I did research for a professor, got to know a lot of faculty, and took afternoon naps in the Arts Quad. It was fantastic! I couldn't see wanting to spend your freshmen or sophomore summer in a city.

If you had a couple things to say about HumEc or the HD major, what would they be? Also, looking at stats from the last year or two of admissions it seems the school is 1:3 male to female; would you say that's about right?

How is AT&T on North? I've heard that there is no service in some of Dickson. Is Verizon really necessary?

What is the easiest language or is there a way to get out of the CAS language requirement by taking summer courses so they don't affect your GPA?

Hot Truck or Louie's Lunch?

Verizon and AT&T have the best service on campus. I have Verizon and it was great. AT&T is just as good...no need to switch providers unless you find your service is awful.

Don't know much about CAS requirements except to remind you that 100 of your 120 credits needed for graduation must be taken in CAS.

Never had Louie's Lunch but Hot Truck is awesome. Although it seems most people are partial to Louie's these days :-)

1) Like the person above said... Verizon works everywhere on campus, AT&T works MOST places on campus but not all.
2) Language courses aren't that difficult theres no need to worry about it affecting your GPA.
3) Hot Truck is better in my opinion. Louie's Lunch has wayy more variety though.

I hate writing. Are the writing courses going to be absolute torture? Is there one that requires less writing lol?

I noticed in Engineering, they offer you the choice between a few different chemistry and physics courses, as shown on the requirements page:
Cornell Engineering : Electrical and Computer Engineering

Just wondering though, how much more difficult are the alternate versions of these courses? Are they known to be ridiculously harder, or just a bit more challenging? I checked the median grade reports, and noticed these classes have many times fewer students, does that help the learning experience? Finally, I also noticed that the median grades are about one + of a grade higher than the regular level of these courses, does that mean that they're curved up a bit higher, or that the students are just that much better at the course?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to know if I'd be getting myself in over my head.

Both. The students are better and the courses are curved higher because they cover more difficult and more advanced material. For example, Chem 209, according to the course book, is a prereq for Chem 208. Chem 215 (which is full of chem majors and people who scored a 5 on the Chem AP test) is essentially Chem 209/207 AND Chem 208 condensed into one semester. So, Chem 209 is nowhere near the level of Chem 215.

It's good for you. Suck it up and enjoy writing.

Some many academic-based questions. Don't worry guys. Cornell is amazing and you'll love it.
