somewhere on the cornell board someone said that students tend to make friends with people of their own race. this worried me a bit. if i traditionally like to have a variety of friends in terms of race, how hard will it be?

I think people tend to make friends with those that they have the most in common with. And much of the time that gets separated by race. It won't be hard to make a variety of friends because everyone is nice, but you might have to try a little harder.

Well if i have more in common with people outside of my race, it shouldn't be hard at all then?

thanks, meestasi!

I have a few questions.

Are there many Sikhs at Cornell?

Would it be feasible to major in both communication and biology if I wanted to go to CALS or should I just stick with one major?

Is Cornell as difficult and stressing as some play it out to be?

Does anyone play soccer there?

Thank you very much!

rockers11- Don't worry. Everything works out and you'll make friends with really

YongeSt.Toronto- Yes there is a decent Sikh population. The Indian population as a whole has a strong presences on campus. There are many clubs such as Society for India and others if you're interested. Also, Bhangra is very very popular here and we have an amazing team that wins a lot of competitions around the country and they always put on great shows.
-You can double major if you can handle it. You'll have a chance to talk to an adviser when you get on campus so I wouldn't really worry.
-Cornell is mostly stressful around prelims (tests) and finals. Other than that most people tend to balance their work out and find time to have fun.
-People do play soccer here. There are some intramural teams you can join if you're interested.

are there a lot of parties? is a car a good idea to have? how are the dorms? what are class sizes? are profs nice? how are marks?...sorry if these were asked before. I really really want to go to cornell...lol i just hope i get accepted

there are a good amount of open parties. you will find atleast 2-3 open frat parties on any given thursday through saturday night. i would say a car is a good idea to have. my good friend has one and it is certainly useful. i would bring my car if i was allowed to. the dorms are excellent, just request a single. class sizes and profs all vary.

do most students who request a single get one?

yes. there are a ton of singles available and there are plenty of naive students who request doubles.

really?
im told by others that singles are always over requested.
and are all the dorms co ed?

you would be surprised how many people are convinced that they need a roomate to get the "college experience" and then regret it. all dorms are co ed except balch which is the female dorm.

can someone explain work- study to me? when do you work? where do you work? where does the money go? what happens if you dont work enough hours? thanks haha...

is there anyway to do coop?

wait so JasonSK, do you mean singles are better than doubles???
so you are advising ppl to choose singles instead of doubles??

yes exactly rach719

All a matter of taste...

I actually know of some friends who requested doubles but got singles. My personal feeling is that there are more singles than doubles, but that might be wrong.

american in canada: Work study is just the money that is available to you if you choose to work. If you don't have work study, it will be a lot harder to get a job on campus because the department will have to pay for it instead of work study. Change "a lot harder" to "almost impossible". If you don't work, then you don't get the money.

I think of it this way. A lot of freshmen want to make some money by working. But there are more freshmen who want to work than spots available. So they create this thing called work study that lets only the people who really need the money work. If you can get by in college without having to work, then don't. It takes up a lot of time that you could use for studying, eating, sleeping, etc.

i want a single, so i don't care where i live as much as i "care" about having a single. would it be a good idea to request balch (someone said if you want a single this is your best bet) or should i just request a single and hope for the best?
is there any way to indicate that your preference for a single is more important than your preference for a certain dorm?

amer in canada- work-study is where the government is paying for your salary while you work. You can do it at almost any place like the dining halls or with in a lab as long as you fill out the paperwork. You work as much as you want, and they'll pay you however much you work. You don't even have to do work study, it's just a part of your financial aid. The money goes directly to your bank account, it's your money, just that it's from the government and not your employer.

sada- co-op is for juniors, and is a 6 month "internship" job where you work for a company. You apply for it during your sophomore year through the engineering school. Don't worry about that yet, it's a long time from now.
