Current Cornellian Here- Ask Me Any Question!!

There are quite a few hairdressers and barbershops and stuff in collegetown, I'm not sure if an are salons, but I doubt you'll ever have time or the need to use one...but I'm a guy, so I can't say.

As for DC++, it has around 19 terabytes of data on it ranging from musics to movies, so I really don't think you're going to need to rent any DVDs since anything current or pretty well-known is on there. If you want a more obscure movie you might have to look harder, but with Cornell's interlibrary loan program, you can get nearly anything, even stuff from the other side of the world.

rockers11- Yeah there are salons in Collegetown and in the Pyramid Mall and through out Ithaca. I don't know how good they are though but most girls seem to find ways to stay pretty so you shouldn't have a problem.

Yeah, DC++ is amazing. Almost anything you want can be found on there. Even your old school favorites like Are You Afraid of the Dark?, The Secret World of Alex Mac, Power Rangers, and others lol.

Hi

How you seen any students at cornell in wheelchairs? If so, how are they looked upon others?

Quick question, is it true that no matter which school u r in(Cas, ag, engineering), on ur diploma it'll only say Cornell University?

How fast are the Download speeds? in kbps?

I know Cornell has a 5GB download limit. Will I ever come close to that if I like to play PC games online and instant message?

maryjulia... why does it matter?... i dont know why people have these notions that some schools at cornell are better than others... each school is better in its field than the others... so choose the school that fits you best...

Download speeds, in my experience, usually hover around 1-5 Mbps. So, you can download a movie on DC++ in about 3-4 minutes.

Mikeyc, you'll probably never reach the 5GB limit with games and IM alone. The only way you'll reach that limit is if you watch a TON of streaming video, of if you download large files outside of the Cornell network (ie. using bittorrent).

okwjoe, I have seen quite a few students in wheelchairs. The entire campus is wheelchair accessible, and students often hold doors open for individuals using them. I think they're looked upon as any other student would be.

okwjoe: Most Cornellians are extremely accepting of differences. It's a big university and I'm sure he will find many friends.

The Office of Student Disabilities offer every accommodation your son might need. However, in my opinion, the topography of Cornell combined with the weather does not make it easy to get around though. There is a bus with a lift for his wheelchair, but in my opinion, the campus is too spread out and hilly... it will be fine, and I'm sure he would make it a great experience (I've read your past posts, he sounds like an amazing kid) but it wouldn't be my first choice if it were my child.

I know of two parents of quadriplegic students... one child attended Brown and the other attended Princeton (a number of years ago). IMO, both campuses are smaller and easier to manage. They both needed full time attendants to stay with them, and both schools had great dorm rooms set up for those purposes. I'm sure Cornell has similar provisions, but I never inquired about it.

You might be interested in this link from New Mobility Magazine. It ranks universities based on mobility impaired students. It's an old article (about 9 years old), but it might be a good starting point.

Good luck to you and to your family.

american in canada, i was just curious..i know exactly which school i want to attend....just curious...

okwjoe- There are some people who are in wheelchairs. I actually know someone who is in a wheelchair who is in a frat so I wouldn't worry about being looked down upon or anything like that. Most people here are nice so don't worry :-)

maryjulia75- Yes, everyones diploma will say Cornell University, don't worry.

patwu89- I know nothing about numbers sorry lol. But a typical song downloads in 1-3seconds from DC++ and movies anywhere from 11-20 minutes. Regular downloads are pretty fast too.

mikeyc765- You really shouldn't worry about going over 5GB unless you watch videos on YouTube all day. If you ever want to download a song or movie or TV show then use DC++ because it doesn't go against your 5GB limit. Also, each gigabyte that you go over, you are charged $1 so it's really not a big deal.

Hey Cornellstudent09, just sent a PM hope you can help, just notifying to check please, thanks!

Were you ever involved in the Cornell Pre-College program? If so, was it difficult to get into and did you find it helpful in your admission to Cornell or preparation for college?

Aight. If you're in CALS, does it say SUNY @ Cornell on the diploma??

To cornell image trollers: I do NOT mean for this post to start the whole Cornell is SUNY flamewar thing. This is a question about words on the diploma...I just want a simple answer about the words. Thas all!

NO!

As a Cornell student, SUNY is not part of my life, and that system has about as much to do with Cornell as the University of Guadalajara does.

wow... r1400sch... wow... some people just don't get it...

r1400sch- No it will not mention SUNY at all. They all say CORNELL UNIVERSITY.

jskpswimn- I wasn't involved in this program. But I've heard some people say that they think it helped in getting them admitted.

Cornellstudent09, check Private message folder please, sorry to bother just looking for some answers/help, thanks

What are some items you wish you had brought to campus but didn't?

more pot, heh...

I think there is a definite use for pots and pans. My hall likes to cook a lot and after my parents sent my pots to me they were really useful. The fining hall food gets old after a while and you really don't want to spend a lot of money sometimes, so you stay in and cook with like 5 other people. Also silverwares and plates and stuff.

Anything that you forget can always be bought at Target or something, there are buses there every 15 minutes from RPCC, so it's pretty convenient.
