Current Cornellian Here- Ask Me Any Question!!

wish I brought more decorations. When packing, I focused only on the essentials. But then after setting my dorm room up, I realized that bare walls and nothing but books in plain view are not too pretty. I was kinda desparate and even taped some quartercards to my walls. well, they are colorful, and we get so many of them. So I ended up going to the campus store for some posters. (and I got some free ones from the johnson museum)

and a printer. I realized this mistake pretty early on after trying to use netprint. It was hard enough figuring out how to use the library without looking like a freshmen who's never used the library. And I looked so silly casually strolling from printer to printer in olin trying to find my reading project essay.

also those electric kettle things are pretty nifty for brewing tea and coffee late at night. and ramen.

the kettle depends on which dorm you're in. I brought one, but in mews we have boiling water that comes in our kitchen, so there was no real use for the kettle.

do u guys party alot : D

flong- yes I would say Cornellians like to party a lot.

I know that you said that housing is only guaranteed until sophomore year. How hard is it get a dorm after sophomore year?

most people move off-campus for junior and senior years. And I'm pretty sure you can easily get a dorm for those years if you choose to.

my understanding is that seniors actually get first picks, then juniors, and soph.

are there any (indie music) concerts in ithaca?

slope day?

Is this winter unnaturally warm in Ithaca? Seemed like it when I went there...no snow on the east coast :(

The music scene is pretty big in Ithaca. A townie lives on my hall and from what I hear there are quite a few concerts around town.

Hah, slope day is the officially sanctioned drinking day at Cornell, or that's what I hear being a freshman and all. And yes the weather has been pretty warm in Ithaca, however from what I gather, it was snowing there a few days back and it's rather chilly there now. I think up and down the east coast it's been unnaturally warm this winter. Chalk it up to global warming.

Hello and thanks in advance for helping me out:
-How would you compare Donlon and Court halls? Both their descriptions make them seem appealing but is one, by experience, a better choice?
-Anyone have any photos of the Court hall dorm rooms? I saw the Donlon room already on the site.
-How close are the tennis and basketball courts from those halls and are they overcrowded/outdoor/indoor?
-Anyone heard of the super smash club? Anything interesting about it? I love the game ^ ^.

Court is a newer dorm. It's air-conditioned, which is nice during the hotter months, but it really doesn't play much of a factor for most of the year. In general, the rooms are a little smaller than in other dorms, but it looks very well-kept since it was built only a few years ago.

I can't say much for Donlon, since I haven't been there much, but it's known as the most social dorm because the layout of the building makes it easy for people to see each other. There's pretty much always noise carried through the halls.

Anyway, I don't know how much this info will help you since you won't be able to choose what dorm you'll be in, unless you want Balch. You'll be fine no matter what dorm you're in.

There are outdoor tennis courts on North Campus (where all the freshmen live.) They're close to Appel, which is where one of the dining halls is. There are also outdoor basketball courts next to the low-rises. I think there's also basketball courts in Helen Newman, but I'm not positive since I don't work out there. You'll have no problem at all getting to any of these places.

As for Super Smash, I have a lot of guy friends that absolutely love the game. You'll have no problem finding other people to play with.

I posted pictures of all the dorms earlier in this thread. Look back if you want to see the pics. Feel free to ask anymore questions, btw.

hey, can you tell me what format the student mailing address looks like?
(let's say i am living in 5400 Balch Hall. )

I need to know this ASAP because my delievery is going to arrive as I move in next week. oh btw, can you get a fedex shipment? it's my laptop.
Thanks!!

Are you moving in on Monday or Tuesday? On all the transfer stuff it says move in on Tuesday, but I read that dorms open on Monday, and I bought my ticket to arrive on Monday....

rosiedaisy,

go to this site: http://www.cornell.edu/search/?q=&submit=go&tab=people

Type in your full name and it will tell you your mailing address.

Hello,

I think I am a generally friendly person and have always somehow made friends with people even though I rarely take the initiative. My question is: at Cornell will other (bolder) students introduce themselves, make an effort to include you, etc. even if they don't know you too well or should I concentrate on making sure to introduce myself to everyone in my immediate vicinity? And is there such a thing as group projects or is that something one leaves behind in high school? Also, anything else about Cornell's social atmosphere is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
