I am freshman computer science major at SCU, ask me anything!
How much exposure to computer science did you have prior to starting at SCU?
Do you like the program? Hows SCU?
Do most students have some prior programming experience?
@sunnyschool
I can’t say if I like it or not since it’s only the first quarter. The University is very nice, small size which means you can build stronger relationships with a lot of people. Dorms are super nice, can live here for 4 years so need to worry about housing.
A lot of students in COEN program does, less in CSCI. I would say around 30%-50% have some kind of experiences before coming here for CS. (like AP cs or some codecademy courses). Most people don’t have advanced experiences like actual project experiences or college level course experiences. My experiences are replied in another comment
not sure why but the reply regarding my experiences can not be posted…
@sfSTEM
here it goes
I have some experience before coming here:
I did game development using Unity3D in high school, attended a hackathon and won 3rd place
I did some web development, developed some very simple sites for myself.
I took a summer course at UC Berkeley, CS61A, structure and interpretation of computer programs.
I took some online coursera courses, like intro to software engineering
Thanks @kychris. How about internships? Have you heard much about that yet? Also, are there particular specialties in CS at Santa Clara? Or is primarily a very good general program?
I am currently applying to many internships. There are lots of resources on campus for internships, there are frequent resume workshop, many companies come here for recruiting and etc. It is up to the students to get involved and find internships themselves but the university definitely has lots of resources.
well, in terms of undergraduate computer science program, pretty much all the universities are learning the same things and they are all fairly similar. The specialties do matter in a graduate level but I don’t have a lot of understandings of that.
How does SCU accept students do they accept by major or by college?
What were your stats when you got in?
