I know this sounds dumb and really pretentious but I'm kind of worried. I'm gonna end up with 3 semester B's by the end of Junior Year, all in math and I'm worried.

To add to that, since I'm bad at math I don't really want to take Math IIC. I know Duke says you can just submit you're ACT score in place of subject tests and I had a good ACT score. Is it truly ok if I only submit my ACT score and no SAT or SAT II? Will I be at a disadvantage?

Duke’s admissions considers EVERYTHING in your application, and grades are just as important as its other six criteria such as teacher recommendations, application essay, extracurriculars, SATs and your talent/ability. That being said, the dean of admissions told us just two days ago at Blue Devil Days that this year they rejected 1300 valedictorians, while still accepting close to 4000 students. The point I’m trying to make is that it doesn’t matter how many B’s you’ve made in the past, you can’t change that. What you can do is try to work hard for the future, not worry so much about the B’s of your past, and focus on grades along with other things that admissions look for.

My daughter was one of the 1300. She never even had an A- in her career, scored a 35 on her ACT, had numerous EC’s, and great essays and still was rejected. I just want you to know just how tough it is to get admitted and somewhat of a crapshoot even for the best.

I thought I was good at math until I got to Duke…lol

Doesn’t really matter how many B’s you have right now; just remember to take the Calc AB/BC credit and take any little math at Duke as possible.

I had none in High School, but that honestly doesn’t mean a thing. Admissions look for a well-rounded individual and a diverse population. If you still think your grades and GPA are low, consider your extracurricular and try to get high scores on the SATs and ACTs. And knock that essay out of the park. A great essay goes a long way. (I had a high GPA, above-average test scores, and few extracurriculars, but a pretty decent essay. I have no doubt that my essay probably played a huge factor in my admissions.)
