Current Economy Affecting Admissions

Do you guys think that UC’s will accept less California residents since they need more money? Out of state tuition is higher (right?) and I know they are cutting back the number of people accepted, so logically to maximize the amount of money they receive, UC’s would accept more out of state applicants. I’m kind of worried about this.

Amusingly enough (not), I was reading an EXACT article about this in the newspaper today. And no, it wasnt titled "UC raises admission rates and gives everyone full-rides" :[

I dont have that particular article at hand, but here's one from the LA Times:

CALIFORNIA BRIEFING - Los Angeles Times

And another one:

http://www.contracostatimes.com/politics/ci_11388989

There are plenty more, if you just google "UC budget cuts."

Depressing, no? Makes you wonder if you might just be one of the 10000 that could have gotten in.... but then the economy had to interfere ><

This is round two for Govenor Schwartzenager! In 2004, when my S was applying to UC's, it was the hardest time in UC history to get into a UC due to budget cuts. Something like 8000 freshman seats were cut then and the tuition started to increase and has never stopped! Now here we go again when my last D is applying and freshman apps are at an alltime high, (at least they were last year)!. Quite frankly I am tired of this and you poor kids who work so hard in high school have to live with all this insecurity! My D is ELC and has been accpeted to some schools but will most likely go to the UW (accpeted already). I am kind of glad as I'm not sure I want to pay anymore money to the California schools as they are used as a ping pong ball in the California Budget. UCLA tuition started around $6000+ in 2004 and is now up too $8000+, our kids are our future and school funding shouldn't be touched IMO. Good luck you guys!

I echo any1can.

Here's the latest proposal -- cutting 6% freshmen (other than at UCLA, Cal & Merced).

University of California officials urge 6% cut in freshmen for fall - Los Angeles Times

Interesting, I did not realize each individual campus's admissions committee had discretion to re-balance the percentage of in-state vs. out-state students.

I thought I read somewhere (and I could be wrong), University of Michigan is required by its charter to take at least 70% of each entering class from instate applicants.

here's what's on UCSB's campus newspaper today

im not sure about OOS though

twenty mill? Thats such a ridiculously low amount of money to cut from education.

20 MILL? What are they thinking? Thats like pocket change to Bill Gates, and they are turning away students who have bright futures.
