Any current/ex El Camino College students here mind sharing your experience on this campus? Such as faculty, parking, transferrence, etc. Thanks.

I’m a current El Camino College student.

So far it has been a great experience here. The faculty is great. Out of all the instructors I’ve taken I can honestly say that only one was incompetent. I don’t know anything about parking here though since I just walk to school.

El Camino has a really good transfer rate to UCLA. It’s second only to Santa Monica College. It has a great Honors Transfer Program, but it may be jeopardized due to budget cuts.

The campus itself is alright I guess. There are a lot of squirrels :)

yea lots of squirrels. current elco student, about to transfer in the fall to ucm.

ive never really had a bad / incompetent teacher.

the only trouble you may have with teachers is if they are the part timers. from my experience at least.

parking sux. if your first class starts after 8, your f’d. especially the first month. youll be looking around for 20 minutes for parking (5 if your lucky and someone is just backing out). spots open up in lunch time because everyone is too lazy to cross the street to subway/mcdonalds/etc so they take their car.

just remember, for the first few weeks, as far as parking/traffic goes, everyone will be thinking the same thing your thinking. if your thinking, “ima take my car out and go to carls jr” 30 other people will be thinking the same thing, and youll be in a long line of cars spending 10 minutes just trying to get out of the PARKING LOT.

at the beginning of this semester, on the first day i spent 40 minutes looking for parking, following about 15 cars in front of me in circles. i finally ended up parking in an illegal space, but im assuming the security let it slide since it was the 1st day. so try that but only on the 1st day.

just to give you a comparison of how bad the parking is: my physics teacher was EXTREMELY STRICT. he marks off on every little thing- impossible to get an A in the class. anyways, he was telling us a story of another teacher who wouldnt let anyone turn in HW after the period started. someone walked into class late because of trying to find parking. my teacher then remarked that the student’s excuse was “a valid excuse”. A VALID EXCUSE! my hard as nails physics teacher saw the parking situation as a valid excuse! that shows you how rough the parking is.

the counselors suck. if you have to ask about guidance in your classes, schedule an appointment with a counselor that specializes in your field. theres a wall full of cubbyholes, each one wiht a different stack of papers regarding different majors. at the bottom of each paper is a name. tht name is the counselor that knows what they are taking about for that major. but if all you have to do is get a prerequisite cleared or something along the lines of that (i.e. nothing that requires the counselors insight) then just do express counseling.

you have a good shot of transferring anywhere you want from elco. there are many classes available, including many offered over summer, although the winter semester is restricted to lower level classes (cant take calculus over winter lol).

good luck!

I went to el co for a year…taking summer school before transferring to ucsd in the fall…

I came from UCR for my first year, didn’t like it.

Parking should be better now that the new 4-5 story structure is built. Should be more than enough parking there now. Parking permit is highly recommended (and cheap compared to 4 yr universities).

The Honors Transfer Program (HTP) is really good about helping you do what you need to to transfer to UC/CSU/privates. It’s also very easy to be a part of, just have a 3.0 GPA. Unfortunately the HTP program is being cut or severely downsized…

The school reminds me of high school design-wise and some things are old or outdated…but it’s good enough to transfer out I suppose…

Ask for Rene Lozano at El Camino. He is a transfer counselor and he is wonderful. I know him personally and he will do whatever it takes to help you get to where you need to go.

Wow, I’m at day 7 waiting for second confirmation e-mail(which is supposed to arrive within 2-5 days) so decided to pick up the phone and call the admissions office. Being put on hold for 40 minutes is one thing but the lady who’s supposed to help just tells me to “wait,” and treating me like a sack of ***** in every possible way. I’m about to just apply to GCC.

Why dont you just go to into El Co? It will take 5 mins to enroll. Seriously.
