If you go to a later orientation, is it harder to sign up for classes/are only 8ams available?

How was your stress level first semester?

It doesn’t really matter if you go to a later orientation, they block off classes each orientation to give everyone a fair shot of getting into the classes they want. So don’t worry about that! I went to the third session(out of maybe 7 I think) and got almost all the classes I wanted!

I was stressed first semester, but not too bad. I feel like my challenging high school prepared me well. That being said, it depends on your schedule and what classes you take. If you’re premed, you’re definitely gonna be more stressed, which sucks. i took a philosophy/theology class, a sociology class, a math class, and first year writing seminar. And I was involved in 2 clubs. A lot of stress actually came from just trying to adjust to living at college and making friends and the social aspect.

Also, obvious but it definitely helps to find ways to cope with the stress

Thank you!

Is the freshman 15 a real thing at BC?

Sadly yes, it’s a thing at any campus really haha. I wish there were more healthy eating options in the dining halls( and better quality fruit tbh). Be careful of “late night” on the weekends(the dining hall serves chicken tenders, fries, and mozzarella sticks that everyone eats after parties and stuff). But the student body as a whole seems to be very active and healthy, which can be motivating!

@Bcfreshman2019 how long do classes usually take out of your day? Like whats your schedule look like for a typical week?

Classes on Monday/Wednesday/Friday are 50 min, classes Tuesday and Thursday are 1 hr and 15 min. Last semester my schedule was:

Monday: work study from 9:45-1, math class from 2-2:50, writing class from 4-4:50(please don’t take a class this late)

Tuesday: philosophy/theology class from 9-10:15, sociology class from 1:30-2:45, volunteering from 4-6

Wednesday: math class from 2-2:50, writing from 4-4:50, philosophy/theology class from 6-about 7:30, club meeting from 8-9, another club from 9:30-10:30----WEDNESDAYS SUCK

Thursday: philosophy/theology class from 9-10:15, sociology class from 1:30-2:45

Friday-same as Monday

How is social life at BC? Is the party scene extremely present, and is it avoidable? What do non-drinkers do on the weekend?

Social life at BC is great. Not going to lie, there is a lot of drinking that takes place: in dorms, tailgates, parties, etc. Sometimes even if people aren’t going out to an actual party, them and their friends will drink in someones dorm for the night–so I guess it is sometimes unavoidable, depending on who you’re friends with. If you don’t want to drink you can still go to parties sober(you don’t have to drink to go to a party), hang in someones dorm, football games, a Capella shows, restaurants, concerts, hockey games, etc. on the weekends. And of course you have the entire city of Boston to explore!

@Bcfreshman2019 how fun are the parties? of course if you don’t know then you don’t have to answer, but I’m curious at how active BC nightlife really is

Parties are fun! It can be hard for freshmen though, since sometimes you don’t really know anyone that’s throwing a party. But there is always the Mods(a type of senior housing) that you can basically always count on to get into if there is an open party happening–it is harder for freshmen guys to get in though. Mods are fun, lots of music and dancing. And there are off campus parties at upperclassmen’s apartments and dorm parties(not in freshmen dorms though) every weekend. And tons of people go out to bars on Thursdays.
But since BC doesn’t have greek life, you don’t have the guarentee of going to/getting into a frat party, so sometimes the party scene is hard for freshmen who don’t really have a place to throw parties/go to parties. It definitely gets way easier after freshmen year for the party scene though, I’ve heard. But I’m a freshmen and still have fun and go out!

Would you say a good amount of students go to the sports games? Sometimes when I see it on TV, the student section can look to be lacking, especially for basketball. Thanks!

People don’t really go to basketball. everyone goes to football(the first half at least) and a ton go to hockey games. The football team wasn’t very good this year, so that’s probably why not as many students went to every game.

how often do you get out to Boston? i know that chestnut hill is more suburban so do people tend to stay there or do they explore the city on weekends?

Hi! Thanks for your help in answering questions. I’m from Missouri and I wanted to know what percent of undergrads were from the New England area and if they were amiable to people from the Midwest or other far away areas.

@anttiniemi:
See page 33 in the BC Factbook at http://www.bc.edu/content/dam/files/publications/factbook/pdf/15_16/15-16_fact_book.pdf

@bella1249 i go to boston a couple of times a work for volunteering/work(Allston). But people go into Boston all the time on the weekends for dinner and stuff. I don’t go out and explore the city as much as I would like but that is just because it can get expensive to do that

@anttiniemi i don’t know what percent are from New England, but there’s a large percentage. People are nice to you regardless of what state you’re from. I’m friends with tons of kids from all over the country

Dear @anttiniemi : Per @jpm50 's post, I decided to review the latest FactBook. Speaking of just enrollment numbers, we see the following for the Class of 2019 :

Massachusetts : 472
New York : 309
Connecticut : 165
Rhode Island : 37
New Hampshire : 26
Maine : 16
Vermont : 7

So roughly 1,032 slots were “New England based” (if you include New York in that definition) from the 2,162 total enrollment.

During the time that both of my children attended Boston College, I can not recall many instances where home states were discussed … aside from the logistics of visiting one another during breaks!
