My D took Finite Math and she is also a total mathaphobe and she was able to do that work. She is very happy to have completed her math requirement!

Thanks to both for your replies. S will be a Theatre major and did not take math this year favoring AP Art Hist instead. Do you think the Finite math will be easy enough to get back into math? He last took math (precalculus) as a junior and worked extremely hard for B’s and B+'s. He was better in Math A and B but still math was always his lowest grade and he had to work hard at it. He got 620 on Math SAT.

jptmom, what semester did your D take Finite math? Not sure if S should take it 1st to get it over with or 2nd to get over the 1st semester adjustment to college life. Then someone else recommended he take math at a local SUNY over the summer and the credits transfer as a pass instead of a grade. I haven’t looked into that option at all yet. Actually, this is my oldest so I haven’t really looked past college decisions and how to pay for it at this point!

To sandkmom: D is a freshman at the LC campus and took it her first (fall) semester to get it over with. She was quite apprehensive but loved her teacher and is glad it is out of the way. She took Algebra I as a HS freshman, Geometry as a sophomore, Alg II as a junior and something called Integrated Math as a senior, which is math for non-math people, so you can see that math is not her strong suit, either. Taking math over the summer might be a way to go, but obviously you should check with Fordham first to make sure they will accept the credits.

Thanks for the info…I’ll pass it along to DS!

I would definitely not take it over the summer. They won’t even allow LC students to fill the core at the RH campus, the chances of them accepting it for the core is very low. Theater majors might have a different core requirement, my roommate is one and she takes different classes. As long as he takes it within the first year it won’t make a difference academically. That said, I recommend he look at the offerings for the spring then use the ratemyprofessor.com site to check the teacher and make sure he gets one that is reviewed as being helpful outside of class. That site has helped me take much better teachers this term over last term. A 620 is not a low score for Fordham so I think he will be fine whatever math he takes!

hi, i’m not sure if you’d know the answer to this but, today i got a financial aid letter in the mail from fordham asking for verification of numbers i put on the fafsa and css profile. On the letter was my Fordham ID, and it eventually landed me on the my.fordham.edu portal. Does this mean I’m accepted?

I can’t give you a definite answer but it seems like that might mean you’re accepted. If it lets you go into the my.fordham portal then yes because that’s the e-mail server. I don’t know why they’d give you an ID number if you were denied.

I was able to see the portal before I received official word. However, I am not sure if I was able to see the portal because I was accepted… Correlation or causation, really.

nyc2013…great advice about ratemyprofessor.com and it sounds like Finite math will be fine for him.

I was admitted to Fordham RH for International Political Economy, I am wondering if this major is excellent in Fordham?

The business and political majors at Fordham are very strong and seem to have probably the largest amount of students in the programs. As a history major I don’t know specifics of that major, but the teachers here are often very caring and willing to go above and beyond what you’d expect to help students. You can contact their department with specific questions about the program, but personally I believe no matter what major you have, there will be many excellent resources here for you!

based on your experiences/the experiences of others—do you mind speaking a bit about financial aid and the flexibility and approachability (if any exists) of the office?

Fordham gives a number of merit scholarships as well as need based aid. From what I’ve heard they are pretty good about meeting the needs of people with lower incomes (meaning I don’t know of anyone who was forced to pick up extra work to make ends meet, nor who was dissatisfied with their package). I was not an applicant who applied for financial aid, but I did receive a generous scholarship. Aside from submitting FASA every year and maintaining a good GPA, I haven’t dealt much with that office. I do, however, have a roommate who has received aid. In general she hasn’t talked much about it except for her work job. It was assigned as part of her package and she had a lot of trouble getting in touch with the people in charge of the program as well as getting her job set up. Other than that, I haven’t heard too much complaint about the program, none of my other roommates with aid have had problems. A good feature of the Fordham e-mail service is that the home page has many tools and one of them is a balance reminder which alerts you if there are any issues with tuition and payments. For someone concerned with financial aid I’d think it would be a good tool for working with the department.

I am an applicant for 2014 and I have found the financial aid office unresponsive. I have sent 2 emails which were never answered and I have left a voicemail which was never returned. (I had to leave the VM because when I called I waited for 20 minutes and then got a recording that said I had to leave a message because they were too busy.) I doesn’t give me a very good feeling…

Question: When do transfer applicants hear? And are there many transfer applicants?

The dates for transfer application acceptance should be on the website, but since most schools just had the deadline for the application it will probably be a while. I’ve met a number of transfer students, they participate in orientation, and are well integrated into the school life as well as curriculum.
To MMouse, you can try contacting a specific financial aid director, their e-mails should be on the fordham website where the department page lists staff. Otherwise call the dean of students office and they can help connect you.

I know a lot of people have been worried about financial aid and hearing about their packets. I wanted to explain that the people in these offices who answer the phones are almost always student workers fulfilling their own financial aid requirements. If you have a question, ask to speak to one of the administrators, do not try to get answers from the secretaries because the likelihood is they are only students and do not know specifics/ can not make promises about dates!

What dorm would you recommend for freshmen?

hey, thanks for starting this thread and for your advice!

I’ve been accepted for the fall 2010 term, freshmen, Rose Hill campus. Is it possible to do an internal transfer and start my fall term at Lincoln Center??

Hey, no problem! I always wished someone had done this for me a year ago.

Internal transfers are possible (I’ve actually done it). I don’t know if they’re available for fall semester anymore though because housing is already being settled. That said, you should call the department of transfer students and inquire about it. I need to warn you, though, if you require housing it will be next to impossible to transfer to LC. They have extremely limited housing since there is only one dorm.

For freshman you should try to get one of the dorms near Mcginley hall. It is really the center of student life. Although the campus isn’t that big that any dorm would put you too far away, it’s important the first year to be near the dining hall and student activities, it makes like much easier. Also, air conditioning/ heating is very important, it’s an easy quality to underestimate and not all dorms have them.
