Current Fordham student open for any questions! =]

This is a stupid question really, but which class is the more advanced class – Composition I or II? Thanks!

Composition II is the second of a two part writing requirement. Freshmen are placed into either course depending I believe on their SAT writing score. If you are in Comp II you only have to complete that course. If you are placed into Comp I for the fall you also have to complete Comp II in the spring semester.

Thanks, Rob. ^^

New question - as a first semester freshman, am I only allowed to take five classes? Is it ill-advised to try and take six?

you are only allowed to take 17 credits per semester, making it near impossible to take six classes unless you happen to be taking a 1 credit class or something, like the freshman symposium.

If you demonstrate your academic abilities well, you should have little issue taking six classes your sophomore year. It may be possible to take six second semester freshman year, but i would not plan on it

Another question - so sorry! I’m trying to plan out a schedule since I register this coming Monday. Is it possible to register for a class that isn’t 1000 level? Say I wanted to take a higher level and I don’t see prereq’s listed.

What do you mean you register on Monday? Fordham takes your questionairre and generates a schedule for you.

I’m not really sure what the answer is to your question. I know that second semester many students had upper level courses. But I don’t know about first.

Lincoln Center freshman students are allowed to register starting August 2 at seven in the morning. The only thing the school registered for me was my EP seminar, the rest I do myself, but yeah it’s only LC that does this. Does a 2000 level count as upper?

Question - when you apply to Fordham, do you have to apply for each campus separately, or are you automatically applying to be considered for either?

You pick which campus you are applying to - Rose Hill or Lincoln Center.

^^^ and if you dont select which one, they will assume its Rose Hill since its larger and can accommodate more resident students.

There is a website where students can review colleges (students review). There are a lot of extremely negative comments regarding Fordham on this site. I realize that there are always people who are not happy or are dissatisfied with this or that, but there seems to be a high proportion of venom there compared to many of the other colleges. Any ideas on why this is?

You wont find a lot of negative venom here from Fordham students and families. Ultimately, you should visit and decide for yourself. Perhaps its wannabes who got rejected at top tier schools and then came to Fordham bitter and decided to be misanthropes and think its funny to trash one’s own school. Or they left Fordham after being disappointed with their grades. Or transferred out and want to trash Fordham. I don’t know, nor do I care.

Any school is what you make of it. You can find negative people at any school. Is Fordham perfect? No. Its jumped up in the rankings more than 20 spots in 5 years. Its incoming classes are increasingly more selective. It is recruiting more nationwide.

Columbia and NYU aren’t perfect either.

And some people just need to grow up and get real and get on with their education and careers. You know what I mean?

sylvan-- Just out of curiosity, I visited the site you mentioned to see what students were saying. I actually don’t know why you think there are more negative comments about Fordham than other schools-- Fordham actually seems to be doing better than most others! Fordham’s overall grade was a B+. NYU and Columbia both got a B-. Harvard got a B. Most of the schools have 75% positive ratings, 25% negative.

I think it’s really all relative. There is ALWAYS going to be something to complain about, no matter what school you go to. (I mean, for god’s sake, I was reading some of the reviews at Princeton, and even they were complaining about muggings and lack of security! They’re in a wealthy suburban town in New Jersey, and we’re in the Bronx, and yet we both complain about crime. A little ridiculous, no?) It’s just a question of whether the positives outweigh the negatives, and I believe they do at Fordham. Online reviews are never the best representation of a school-- just come visit and experience the environment for yourself.

I’ve been on that site before. I didn’t think Fordham had any more negative reviews than the other schools my S was looking at and sunshowers23 demonstrates that perfectly. I do remember finding the whole site to be more on the negative side and wondering if writing these reviews was in some way therapeutic for the reviewers who had a bad experience at their school! Not necessarily a bad thing IMO but not exactly objective either.

Is there SOME truth to some of the reviews? Probably. But you have to take it for what it is considering that every story has three sides…your side, my side and the truth. It is quite likely that some of the reviewers are posting their honest opinion to help others see some of the pros and cons of life at Fordham. It is also just as likely that some of the posters have an agenda whether that is to make Fordham look really good or really bad. Remember, these reviewers do not make up the entire Fordham community. They are only a small part of the population, the people who took the time to write a review for whatever reason. You probably don’t want to rely on anyone else’s opinion anyway. You are SO much better off forming your own!!

ok so, I was offered housing @ RH, but I denied it b/c I live in the Bronx. However, I now regret it b/c despite Fordham’s commuter-friendly attittude, I still feel that I’d be missing out on a huge part of the college experience if i dont dorm at least one year…and so I want to dorm sophmore year.
most of my questions have already been answered in regards to the best dorms, etc…but i’d also like to know…if I join the 2010-2011 waitlist, do the people that arent picked this year still stay on the waitlist for next year? or do they have to fill out another one for 2011-2012?

I am 99.9% sure that you sign up every year for the commuter wait list for housing, but a quick call to ResLife can confirm this is the case. You can probobly still sign up for the wait list for this year and there is a chance that you can get a dorm after the first semester ends (some students go abroad, others leave so space can open up). Once you are in a dorm, you are guaranteed space for the rest of your four years at Fordham. We live near Fordham (though not as close as you) and my S dorms – none of us have regretted that choice. Good luck to you.

hello,
do you think its worth buying that 19.99$ pack of sheet or whatever other offer they’re proposing?
I’m an international student so I admit that it would be easier to order before hand and not hav to worry about it once I arrive in NYC, but I don’t want to be ripped-off either (even if its only 20$)!
Thank you
(Btw it’s really nice of you to have created this thread)

thanks for opening this thread its been a life-saver. how is the quality of the communications program. thanks
