bluedevilmike or anyone, while this question doesn't fall under any specific course, you mentioned that you took 36 courses at Duke. I know most people take 4 courses a semester (so 32 over 4 years) while a lot say that you will overload (5 courses) for one semester. I am just wondering how much of your scheduling is determined by you? As a Pre-Med and hopefully a History minor, will my advisor be active in forming my schedule so that I can fit the Pre-Med reqs and 5 history classes?

Your scheduling is in your own hands. Of course, there are certain limits to what you can do. No signing up for 9 courses, for example.

When it comes to actual requirements, it's always helpful to actually check the Duke website: http://pubpol.duke.edu/undergraduate/curriculum/

You don't need to take econ before taking pps 55. Take it as soon as you can, if there's space.

You only need to take econ 51 for the major. It's now being taught as an "intro to econ" of sorts, covering macro and micro. They changed the requirement last year, as macro used to be 51 and micro was 55.

can u guys post ur freshmen schedule for someone who is premed?

Writing/Seminar, Chem, Math, Language.

Can you take Math 32L in the fall without any AP credit?

Avoid Leachman for Econ 51D.
Avoid John Hart for freshman history.
Judith Kelley for PPS55 is awesome.
Mukherjee for Writing 20 is GREAT. Hard, but great.
DON'T TAKE PHIL.48. JUST DON'T DO IT.
Spanish department just sucks in general. All the teachers are GREAT professors for the most part, but the curriculum is horrible and I learned nothing.

^Are language classes typically hard? I can handle easy and boring, but I was thinking of taking Spanish and language is definitely my weakest subject.

Some great instructors I've had in the past:
Math103 - M. Hodel
Physics53 - B. Mueller
Physics54 - J. Thomas
Bio119 - D. Kiehart
Bio152 - T.P. Sun
Latin1,2 - R. Larsen
Clst53 - J. Sosin

the problem with languages in general is that they are very fast paced and so you must absorb a lot of material very fast. With the exception of the classical languages, the intro language courses meet every day; all language classes seem to have a considerable amount of homework.

Ugghh. Thanks :

If you have experience though, ask for placement in foreign language. Higher level classes can sometimes have a lot less work. The downside is you definitely have to know what you are doing because the level of the material is very high.

Leachman is hard and tests are poorly written, but she is certainly worth it anyway.

Phil 48 could potentially be very helpful for LSAT takers.

The curriculum would probably help, but both the instructors this year were pretty horrible. Just read it out of the book.

Any other recommendations for Bio teachers?

My D is currently taking PHY53 from McNairy. She is very frustrated with his style. Any helpful suggestions?

I had the same situation....he was my recitation instructor (useless). To survive, I recommend meeting with whoever she's worked other than McNairy (lab TA, lecturer, recitation instructor - depending on who else is around). Going to the physics help room is good too, as you can get to know other TAs who might offer help. I'm not sure how summer session teaching works, but it's also good to go to office hours with your recitation instructor good no matter (no matter who he is) - they can see the effort you have put in as they assign final grades.

Unfortunately Mcnairy is also the recitation instructor...and one of the TA's I have found to be incredibly unhelpful, so that leaves 1 resource, and my lab TA isn't always around. I have a tutor, and that's where I figure out most of physics basically...that's how I'm getting by right now in Phy53.

dogonmoon- Your D is totally not the only one! I feel like I have NO grasp of the material at all because I feel like his lectures are so disjointed...our test today should be very interesting...

For Physics 53/54, I really liked Dr. Evans. He is a great professor and I really understood the material well. He's also really helpful outside of class if you take advantage of his office hours. I think he only teaches in the summer though, but you could check on that.
