Dear AlananhR : The men’s hockey program is one of the great ticket packages for students from October through April. While this season was generally viewed as a down year (making the NCAA tournament but falling to Denver in the opening round, falling in the first round of the Beanpot), the team generates a huge amount of buzz around campus. The women’s program has really stepped forward and this year’s team was outstanding. Women’s tickets are free and you would be well advised to check out a game or two.
As for track and field, this is not a general “strength” at BC with the training facilities away from campus. You would be best advised to directly contact the program with your interests.
The intramural sports scene is very strong with intramural leagues often drawing strong competition to win a seasonal t-shirt, beer mug, shot glass, or similar. In particular, the soccer and volleyball leagues seem to draw great interest and all levels of competition.
Dear Massmom2015 : Apologies for answering in place of nolives - no offense intended to nolives. However, I would strongly advise against looking into single rooms with private baths as a freshman. One reason for this is that such facilities are reserved for specific needs.
However the real reason is that you do not want to provide any freshman with a chance to “hide” or seclude themselves from the campus to student body. You will always want a set of eyes seeing others in the dorm as a form of checks-and-balances in addition to what an RA can provide. While your dormmate might not turn out to be a life-long best friend, that person will be someone who can help when your child is ill (and needs to get something from the dining hall), can share resources (radios, music, and such), and can help with move-in and move-out once you get to know them.
The best way to enjoy the social aspect of college is to “get involved”. The broader the circle of friends, the better the involvement. As an example, my older’s freshman year featured a dorm room in Medieros (upper) with a big screen TV, DVD player, full video hookup, full refrigerator, gaming consoles, and projectors … honestly, I was jealous.
The result was that Super Mario Brothers, Guitar Hero, big screen BC games, and movies all became part of the social fabric for the whole dorm within the first five weeks of classes. It was wonderful to see.
@Massmom2015:
I too had a concerned reaction to the question you posted about a single room. While there may be cases where a single room is required, having one makes it too comfortable for a student to stay within their own small world.
The real value of BC, like many other schools, lies in what’s learned outside the classroom. Scottj worded it quite well.
The short answer is yes, they exist, but they are few and require a solid medical excuse. But agree with the other parents, a roomie is usually a BIG plus. It’s a great way to expand your ‘conversation partners’, which is what a great university is all about.
scottj: I wanted to thank you for that post, I should’ve explained why I was asking that questions in the first place. A good friend of mine has a d and she’s a junior this year. She has a disability that would require her to have those types of accommodations in college. I am glad for all the wonderful advise from yourself and jmp50 and bluebayou. I will pass along this information so she can add BC to her d’s college list. Most college’s she has been looking into don’t have the appropriate facilities her d needs. Thanks again for all your advise, I will be sure to let my d know there is support where every she ends ups.
jmp50: thank you too for all the input concerning my questions, I should have cleared up why I was asking that questions. I was finding this info for a close friend who’s d has a disability and needs accommodations.
bluebayou: I am glad that I can tell my close friend that BC will be able to provide the type of accommodations her d needs and she can apply in her senior year. Once again thanks for that information.
@ikp1519- you can’t request Newton or upper but there are certain dorms on upper (example Kostka- all girls) that you will be assigned to if you request an all girls dorm. My D’s friend wanted upper so she wrote on her housing form that she wanted to live in an all girls dorm. Check the website for more specialized housing that are located on upper campus.
@lkp1519 I thought I read that if you volntarily request the Newton campus, then you are guaranteed to not get a “forced” triple. I could be mistaken, but thought I saw that as one of the only “requests” available.
Can’t find specific enough info on Medeiros dorm rooms to help plan usage of space. Anyone have photos of the interior dorm rooms (again, specifically, Medeiros) to share? Thanks!
We checked our daughter in on Wednesday because she’s attending Band Camp. Although she’ll be living on Upper, we checked in at Stayer on Lower Campus. It was super fast and easy. Stayer is the summer early check in location, but because there will be so many checking in (for orientation 7) I can see why you would wonder. Maybe call Res Life?
Dear veryproudfather : In your daughter’s housing packet, you will of course find not only her dorm on Newton Campus, but you should also see check-in information there. Additionally, you will find the following link to be useful before your travels.
Thank Scottj for the information. Yes, we received the housing packet but there was no information regarding early check in. We also called but the person we spoke to did not know some of questions / concerns. We wanted to know if there will be wagons or carts to load all the bags, boxes, etc at the Newton Campus on Sunday morning.
Would anyone know if carts would be available? Thanks
not to worry, the Welcome Wagon will be out in full force. Just ask and the sherpas will empty your car and schlep the stuff up the stairs and down halls. A great time will be had by all.
