Hey guys I am a current freshman at GW, and I would be happy to answer any questions you might have for me. I'll try to be as thorough as possible.

Hi there! I’m going to be applying ED at GW. Did you do an interview for GW, and if so, any tips? I have one coming up.Also, why did you choose GW over your other choices?

A question on social life at GW: one of the dorms at GW was just voted a “top party dorm” nationally, or some such thing, in a story addressing college social life. Is that the case for most dorms at GW? Or are there more serious spots/dorms where studying and the like is the focus? Thanks.

There are just certain dorms that better facilitate partying. Thurston is classically known for being a party dorm because it is all freshmen, but the places with the best space for parties are Ivory, City Hall, South which are all upperclassmen dorms. As far as more “serious” dorms, I think Mitchell would qualify because it’s all single. But there are a lot of places you can go all over campus for studying.

I’m a freshman in Thurston now and although the floors can be loud you can definitely get work done. There’s a silent study area in the basement of Thurston with group work rooms as well that I get a lot of work done in. There’s also the library where a ton of people work. I can get work done in my room as well sometimes, but it all depends on what my roommates are doing- and I’m sure that’s the same in whatever dorm you’re in.

Most of the other dorms on campus are a quieter, and I don’t think Mitchell’s open for freshman housing, but it more depends on your roommate’s work schedule, because you can always shut the door to your floor.

Also about Thurston, it’s pretty crazy the first few weeks when people aren’t serious about school, but once professors start assigning a lot of stuff it quiets down a lot. It’s a really fun place to live though because so many people live here so it’s really easy to visit your friends. That’s the thing about Thurston, it sounds like a crazy dorm (which it can be), but a lot of that comes from the fact that there are a ton of people here (about half the freshman class)!

As for quieter dorms on campus, I’ve heard that a lot of the dorms on the Vern are pretty quiet and have more of a community style. Madison and Potomac are also nice.

mcb330, I guess I’ll answer your question as well, I did interview for GW, though I applied RD so it was more competitive. When you go into the interview have questions about the school ready and be prepared to say why you’re interested in the school. I wouldn’t worry about it too much though, I was so nervous and then my interviewer started asking me about some of my extra-curriculars and what I was interested in and we automatically clicked; I’m actually still friends with my interviewer! Maybe send a thank-you email after your interview as well, that’s what I did and I got in!

I chose GW over my other options (AU, UVA, OSU, and Univ of Richmond) because I loved the atmosphere of the campus and the many opportunities that I DC would afford me. I’m also studying International Affairs and the Elliott school is world-renowned and opens up so many opportunities! I also got a pretty big scholarship to come here which definitely helped.

Hopefully this helped someone and good luck everyone!

2015gwu or kb0, do either of you know the max amount presidential academic scholarship gw offers? I would love to be able to attend but unfortunately it won’t be possible unless I get a pretty big scholarship.

Hi,

I read somewhere recently that the honors program was being moved to the Mount Vernon campus - is this true? I’m asking because I’m really interested in/applied to the honors program, but I want to live and take classes on the Foggy Bottom campus.

Yes, true.

OMG . Im saving that for the rest of my lifeee .
im in a GW article !!! :D

atheira, I think the maximum is $10,000-15,000 a year for those specific scholarships (though I don’t think they make the official decision until later on this year)…at least those were last years’ numbers. But if you have any financial need and also qualify for scholarships you can get more (I got a $25000/yr scholarship and I think some people got $30,000). And if that still isn’t enough or if you don’t qualify for those scholarships GW gives really good financial aid, I know I got way more than I expected!

I would recommend at least applying and seeing what you get because I was in the same boat as you; there was no way I was going to GW if I didn’t get a substantial amount of aid, and luckily I did and I love it here!

Has anyone noticed that the OP, who offered to answer any questions people might have, has answered zero questions?

Okay, thanks! I will probably qualify for need based aid too, I’m not sure of the amounts though.
I think (hope) I’d qualify for a merit scholarship as well… 33 act 96 gpa

Atheira, I think with those stats, you’ll definitely qualify for a merit scholarship. GW is pretty good about giving scholarships.

are there many school sponsored activities? and if so do students really attend?

Yes, and yes. There is always something (actually many things) going on, and lots of people go.

There are always tons of things to do. I’m involved in a lot of activities here, and I go to quite a few. In a city this vibrant and exciting, there’s always something fun to do. And since there are hundreds of student orgs here, you’ll definitely find at least two or three that really interest you and you’ll always have plenty to do.
