Current Frosh Taking Questions from Class '13

Congrats guys! If you're sure that you are going to Stanford, vacillating, or somewhere in the middle, I'll try to answer your questions about Stanford to the best of my ability, and as time permits. Also, if someone from the general public wishes to ask a question, feel free, as long as its not about admissions/stats. Congratulations once again!

^^Thanks so much! I am so excited for Admit Weekend and, if I get really lucky, next year (I’ve decided on Stanford, but my parents want me to visit campus first because I’ve never been before…just want to get a feel for the school and area before I commit I guess…:D!). I think I’ll love it.
I have a question regarding Admit Weekend actually…I’m assuming you went (it seems like most do), so I’m wondering if you went all three days or just two (or one). My parents are considering flying out Wednesday evening, staying at a hotel that night, and then getting to campus early Thursday…does this sound like a good plan or do you think it would be just as well to arrive later Thursday or Friday?

Congrats again! Np. I did what your parents advised, it’s a great plan, reduces stress, and allows you to stay the whole of admit weekend. I then left late Sunday, because like you, I had never been to Stanford (or California in fact) prior to admit weekend so I could go around the Bay Area a bit.

As a freshman, how often would you say freshmen get to go out for parties?

^Thanks for the reply. I’ve been to the LA area before, but not the Bay Area, so that may be a good place to explore Sunday…we’ll have to think about that.
So, where are you from? I’m from Minnesota, so I’m really excited to get out of the cold!! haha.

inev, usually there are big parties every weekend (save finals and dead week), so you could theoretically go out every weekend…but most go out once or twice a month.

dpattzlover, I’m from NJ…not as cold as Minnesota but I know what you mean.

what are the research opportunities like for undergrads? I’m interested in artificial intelligence/robotics, and i really want to be able to do heavy duty research in my undergrad years. (i actually want to do research for the rest of my life, but thats another matter.) Is it easy to come across? Is there competition for grants? Are research opportunities there for everyone who wants them, or will i have to compete with others for a place?

Lol, because I’m obsessed with the weather (I am a Native Cheesehead and an honorary Minnesotan), what is the weather like during the “seasons”? Does it vary much at all? Per my weather widget, it looks like it’s 63 degrees in San Francisco…ah, that sounds great!

so wait
people don’t party a lot there???
once a month…?

and what is ‘‘dead week’’?

Dead Wk

A wk before finals to study. if i am not wrong, they dont have classes either.

How do most students spend their weekends?

My frosh S had all classes continue through dead week, with assignments and papers due, too.

there are classes on dead week. no classes on finals week.

weekends are spent doing schoolwork, relaxing, shopping, partying, traveling to SF with friends…but mostly studying (if you have an exam approaching). There are also events and speakers sometimes.

weather is amazing most of the time. Fall quarter was sunny and nice. winter quarter was rainy (not super heavy). spring quarter is sunny and nice. yeah it’s very pleasant today (sunny 65 degrees). and it gets warmer too!

as for partying, there are parties every weekend and there are lots of people who party every week (thursday, friday, and saturday mostly). Or you can choose to party once a month, or never, or whenever you feel like it. and believe me, stanford knows how to party.

I heard it gets chilly in the evenings. My mom (who went to Berkeley) said she needed a jacket at night. How true is this? Like, even on the really warm days?

All though I am not sure about robotics per se, I know there are REU (engineering research study grants) that are available to undergrads. The competition is not too much-but they don’t give it to everyone I’m guessing. If you’re passionate and serious, you’ll be fine.

Palo Alto weather !=San Francisco weather, you’ll learn that soon enough. Palo Alto is its own subclimate-usually about 5-10 degrees warmer than SF. The weather does vary, but it’s more like rainy and cool season versus warm and very dry season. The rainy/cool season starts in December and lasts until the middle of March. Everything else is the latter.

nah, I said there are parties about every weekend-HOWEVER-you may not want to go out every weekend if you have work that you want to complete. There are people who go out a lot-indeed I did last quarter while taking almost the maximum number of units, but obviously not everyone does that.

Your mom is more or less correct for the most part. It does get to be quite chilly at night, unlike the Mid-Atlantic, when if it’s really hot in the day, it’s still warm at night.

Dead week is the week before finals. Some of your classes may not meet during dead week (I know CS 106A didn’t) but count on class and assignments being due. It’s the worst week of the quarter to be honest-even worse than finals week.

Is admit weekend fun? I heard from a friend that it doesn’t necessarily give you a real view into the “normal day of a Stanford student” because of how structured it is. For instance I heard it is a completely dry weekend.

Whats an average weekend like?

I found it to be very fun, but your friend is correct. There is a “Camp Stanford” feel to it…which is not necessarily like your life at Stanford. Take everything with a grain of salt, but Admit weekend does give you a crash course of some of the most important things about Stanford.

That’s a loaded question. It really depends what you want to make it. Usually I wake up late, around noon on both days do some work in the middle of the day and then if it’s Saturday, and I’m up to it, go out. Otherwise I just chill with friends at night and have fun. It really is totally up to you.

i want to convince myself that stanford is the place for me. right now its down to MIT Penn and Stanford, but being an east coaster, i dont know as much about Stanford as i know about all the big name east coast schools. could you please give me random tidbits of info, interesting facts etc that will help me convince myself? (i know that makes no sense, but bear with me haha)
also, the campus seems to be very spaced out compared to other campuses. can you tell me what effect this has on social life? lastly, is it true that all parties are shut down at 1am?
